COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Filtered.
Marketed in the United States as Olde Suffolk.
dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

Lovely reddish brown colour, with a light head. Aroma of hay, raisins, apricot. Flavour combines fruity, strawberries, cherries, with a slighty sour complexity and bready taste. Would love to taste unblended 5x. Why does a brewery capable of making such an interesting, complex beer mostly make such boring stuff?

Bottle. Clear dark brown with a medium sized light brown head. Cocoa, wood, earthy, dark fruits, dried fruits, light caramel, flowery hops. Medium body, oily texture, soft/medium carbonation, medium sweet and bitter. Ok, ok.

Classic and leading English ale, blend of an old beer with a young one and in that sense an interesting expansion of the relatively limited but complex world of English old ales, which Michael Jackson compared to the Rodenbachs. Complex, interesting beer with lots of maltiness and dried fruits, cake and sweet caramel malts, subtle sourish note, complex finish with warming alcohol. I definitely have to try this again some time.

I agree with the cookie comments on previous ratings. Pretty nice malty and slightly spicy brew here. Medium to thick bodied, and pleasantly warming all around. I’ll likely get every now and then..."

Rødbrun i fargen med et lite beige skum. Aroma av malt, rosiner, karamell, mørk- og syrlig frukt. Smaken følger aroma, men alkoholen tar litt mye plass.

330ml bottle from Tesco (£1.79):
Sweet to start with dark, ripe fruits & sugar. Rich smelling with some figs, dates, musky notes & caramel malts with some toffee. Sweet without overpowering, some bread, faint vanilla & subtle hops also feature.
Chestnut brown & clear with a 1cm, fine bubbly head that’s a light brown colour & fades to a thin, patchy lacing after about 35 seconds.
Quite sweet with sugar & fruits that includes raisin & figs. Vanilla & hops around the middle but neither manages to dominate. There is some toffee & caramel malts in there as well with some oak & butterscotch too.
Rich & very sweet with a smooth, medium body & light carbonation. The beer is quite complex & rich with an ever so slightly bitter finish.

Started very well with a lot of sweetness & various fruits & held up well right until then end when it started to fade ever so slightly. Not a bad beer at all but it falls short of being a great one.

Taste is kind of harsh grassy, alcohol, dark malts, grass, minerals, weeds, hay, sour coffee. Medium bitterness, sour-ish watery and metallic mouthfeel. Meh!

Bottle from Tesco, consumed at home. Dark brown but fairly translucent. Little head but a fair bit of carbonation. Musty aroma of raisins, a bit acidic. Smells like a slightly off cask ale. Taste is better, sweet with a lingering sourness. Lovely full finish, very moreish. Not bad at all. I do wish all Greene King beers were this good...
