dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

Lovely reddish brown colour, with a light head. Aroma of hay, raisins, apricot. Flavour combines fruity, strawberries, cherries, with a slighty sour complexity and bready taste. Would love to taste unblended 5x. Why does a brewery capable of making such an interesting, complex beer mostly make such boring stuff?

Dark brown with small head. Aroma has a lot of caramel, some sourness, chocolate, toffee. Taste is oaky, a bit sweet, toffee, fruits. Low carbonisation. After has a lot of oak. Good and tasteful beer!

Bottle. Murky dark brown, no head. Complex Molasses, burnt caramel, fruit cake, nut, oak and vanilla aromas. Predominantly sweet flavours of dark caramel, vanilla oak, nuts and boozy Christmas cake, with just a hint of bitterness to clean all of the sweetness up. Delicious beer, especially with a piece of Stilton. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very good, dark brown & decent off- white head. Plenty of caramel malt, brown sugar and some red fruit. Body light to medium.

Pours dark amber from the glass with a thin, creamy head. Aroma is red wine and wet wood. Taste is a little sour, malty, with lots of red wine and hints of tea. Minimal bitterness. A little thin on the palate, threatens to become watery but never does, but nowhere near full-bodied. Low carbonation. A short and lightly sweet finish. The flavors on this one may have been dulled by coming up too cold out of my cellar, so a retaste will be necessary. Good.

0.33l bottle as Strong Suffolk Dark Ale. Reddish amber body, thin beige head. Aroma of caramel, orange zest, figs and some vanilla. Taste of caramel, figs, dates, toast and floral hops. It really has an oaky character. I like it.

Pours a copper amber with a short khaki head. Peculiar aroma, like a tar smell that wafts into the car when driving past a construction zone for paving. Buttermilk, used, but clean ashtray, and fruit aromas are also noted. Rich, not creamy, mouthfeel. The flavors are remarkably similar to what is noted in the aroma.

Klasse

Dark brown color, medium head. Aroma of oak, caramel, vanilla and whisky. Taste is a bit sweet, low bitterness and a pleasant aftertaste of noble alcohol, suggesting a much higher abv. Very complex and surprisingly drinkable.

Farven er mørk gylden med en flødefarvet skumkrone. Aromaen er eg, malt og frugt medens smagen er malt, modne frugter og farin.

33cl @ bottle. Scura inglese, bell’aspetto, aroma che si può migliorare. Gusto discreto. C’è di meglio in giro.
