dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

UPDATED: MAR 23, 2009 Duvel glas, bottle. nice head with, reddish ruby brown appearance. Caramel, oak and cherry, cookie dough, hints of raisins and citrus. Enjoyable long spicy aftertaste. One of the better British ales but nothing breath-taking. A nice and solid experience. Yes Please again sometime. Hard to get here in Sweden.

Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 16.9 ounce bottle. Appearance: Stained maple, clear, rapidly fading head. Aroma: Smells like a musty, dark old bar, tobacco-y. Taste: Complex, brown sugar, tobacco, caramel, dark cherries, and oak. Palate: Full body with low carbonation. Overall: Rich and good.

Kolor rubinowy klarowny. Piana jasna, obfita z drobnych pęcherzy, opadając dziurawiła W aromacie dominowały słody, ciemne i karmel. Dalej wyczułem trochę owocowości, dębowego drewna i chmiel. Smak zbliżony nieco do ….wina. Ciemne słody kontrujące lekką goryczkę to mieszanina owocowości (wiśniowej), karmelu, jest też lekki kwasek. Goryczka lekka, z czasem podbijana przez wysokie stosunkowo wysycenie i alkohol. Wyraźne są też akcenty „dębowe”. Ogólnie treściwe, smaczne i bardzo pijalne.

Bottle shared at GBBF, bottle conditioned 1995 vintage, silver foil, 6.0%. I picked this up because I once watched a Michael Jackson programme which showed the huge vats this is aged in. Dark brown, still, no real head. Aroma is jammy, blackcurrant, vimto. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is light, semisweet malts, some oak character showing up, sweet berries with a soft finish. Pretty nice for a 20 year old beer, and chuffed to finally catch up with this one.

Dark...cola colored with a cherry red tint. Robust aroma of dark fruits. Nice and sweet, followed by some coffe like malty goodness. Deep and hearty. Well done

Bottle shared at GBBF 2015, day 2 - London. Cheers, fellas! Vintage 1995. Pours clear brown with a bubbly, off-white head. Rich tangy ripe fruits in the aroma, faint metal, caramel. Medium sweet flavor with gooey caramel, ripe fruits, brown sugar. Full bodied and chewy, with fine soft carbonation. Lightly warming in the finish, sticky sweet, with notes of plums, dates, wood and brown sugar. Nice stuff given its advancing age.

Here we have a stunningly beautiful ale, which is nice in the glass with a good blonde from a little thin, but persistent foam. Partly high carbonation. The aroma is not as prominent, but is malty and fruity. The taste is very vinous and distinct taste of dried fruits. Raisin and prune are most prominent but it has also a little orange peel on the sidelines along with slightly burnt caramel. Saving for 2 years in oak can be tasted a little of its malt rich fullness. It is simply a pleasure to encounter an ale of this quality.
