Draft at Rattle’n’Hum. Dark brown color with tan spongy big head, bitter coffee taste, average carbonation, slight doughy aroma, abrupt finish.

A deep dark brown ale with a thin brown head. In aroma, a lightly spiced and herbal caramel, with light ginger notes. In mouth, a rather strange mix of chocolate, light coffee and sugar, a bit thin, not what was expected. On tap at Rattle’n’Hum, Sept 21, 2012.

Tap at the stags head. Pours black I had no idea what this was based on the name I was not thinking porter with Belgian yeast. U get fruity Belgian yeast, roasted malt, chocolate, and earthy bitterness. Pretty tasty

Draft. Dark, hoppy, yeasty, almost like a black IPA in my opinion.. pretty easy on the palate and very drinkable and thirst quenching surprisingly. Very good

Draft. Pours near black with a beige head. Spicy saison-like yeasty aroma with chocolate malts. The flavor has spicy yeast, dark chocolate malts, herbal notes, and light floral hops. Nice.

filled the growler up at Port Jeff Bev, drunk at RBSG - Not bad, but I’m guessing this one was a bit too long in the growler. Milk chocolate and dark malts with a touch of hops. Plenty of phenollic, belgian yeasty character and some smoke and pepper spices.

In short: A bland oily black beer of some kind
How: Fresh growler shared with a few friends in a hotel room pre-RBSG 2011 tasting.
The look: Near black body topped by a small beige ring of head
In long: Strong nose of black liquorice, chocolate malts and sweet bakery stuff. Body is a bit thin, oily with low carbonation and flavors of tar, vanilla, black liquorice, dark fruits, yeast, some chocolate. Listing the flavour elements it seems like any other decent black Belgian ale however the whole thing felt a bit amateurish. Not much to enjoy here, not much to dislike either. Forgettable. This Canard Noir is nothing to be proud of and I find it pathetic how people seem to think that using a few french words will make something pathetic sounds classy. Oh well, c’est la vie.
