From the brewer: Brewing a balanced beer is always a top priority when it comes time for recipe formulation at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. While Other Side IPA is hop forward as it should be, with nearly 3 pounds of hops per barrel - it also achieves balance. A blend of North American pale, light munich, light crystal and Carapils malts provide a light, malty backbone as foundation for multiple additions of Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Warrior hops. Hoppy, yet balanced - the sixth brew of our Project Hoppiness series is a nod to the IPAs we love from the other side of the country. Project Hoppiness is GHBC’s project to explore the world of humulus lupulus, the common hop. An ever changing variety of hop forward ales will excite your taste buds with new experiences, none quite like the last. Bringing forth happiness through hoppiness.

New Beer Distributors, NYC bottle ($2.25): Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is distinctly tropical fruit, grapefruit, west coast whatever, from the moment that I cracked the cap with my office stapler (really the only reason I keep a stapler next to my computer). Taste is immediately bitter then hits with a touch of sweet and then the bitterness takes back over and lingers deep into the aftertaste. Pretty good, although it is certainly not breaking new grounds. Not as juicy as some west coasters and certainly less malty than the east coasters. Good.

7.5%ABV. American IPA. Clean. Light. Floral citrus nose. Sweet. Malty. Heavy palate. Alcoholic. Bitter all the way to end. Cuts bitter and ends that way. Nice and full enough of the herbaceously bitter hops to be a proper American IPA. Not much else in the way of aroma to make it interesting.

64oz growler from Superstar Huntington pours a murky orange with some frothy white head. Nose has orange and grapefruit peel, some soap, mild pine, a little malt, a little fruit. Flavor is heavy with citrus bitterness, some mild fruit to round things out, some more tannic grist character, quite a bit of soap. A little grating on the finish which distracts.

Draught in brooklyn. Hazy murky gold/amber. Pine sap and muted tropical stuff on the nose, some dank spice. Taste gives nice guava and pine resin, some light spice, bit of booziness, some sweeter malts that get a bit sticky. Spice and rough bitter pine needles to finish. Tasty stuff.

@ The Ginger Man à Manhattan. En fût. Une bière dorée foncée avec une mousse blanche. Un nez de houblon américain et de malt blond. Une bouche intense de houblon avec une amertume marquée. La texture est parfaite pour soutenir ces houblons.

Location: Growler from Superstar Beverage - Huntington, 9/11/14

Aroma: The nose is resin hops dominant, with plenty of tropical fruit, quite hoppy and very clean
Appearance: It pours a clear golden-orange color with a sheeting white head and nice lacework
Flavor: The flavor is lightly sweet/fruity, but leans much more toward the hop bitter side
Palate: The body is medium, it has a smooth feel, soft carbonation, and a long, dry finish
Overall Impression: I thought this was an excellent IPA. It is quite dry and has a really enjoyable flavor. I am quite impressed by this one. It could be quite dangerous at over 7%. This is a very west cost style beer from a very east coast brewery.

Draft at top hops New York. Pours yellow with a half inch of white foam. Leaves a fair amount of lacing. Not a ton on the hops. Lovely grapefruit notes on the tongue. Finishes clean. Nice!
