From the brewer: Brewing a balanced beer is always a top priority when it comes time for recipe formulation at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. While Other Side IPA is hop forward as it should be, with nearly 3 pounds of hops per barrel - it also achieves balance. A blend of North American pale, light munich, light crystal and Carapils malts provide a light, malty backbone as foundation for multiple additions of Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Warrior hops. Hoppy, yet balanced - the sixth brew of our Project Hoppiness series is a nod to the IPAs we love from the other side of the country. Project Hoppiness is GHBC’s project to explore the world of humulus lupulus, the common hop. An ever changing variety of hop forward ales will excite your taste buds with new experiences, none quite like the last. Bringing forth happiness through hoppiness.

On tap at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn NY on 3rd July 2013. Almost clear amber with white ring and film top/part lacing. Rich and intense hoppiness. Intensely bitter grassy hop in-mouth. Solidly hoppy bitter finish - very bitter in rear of mouth and tangy in front. Light mouthfeel and medium body.

Tap at Good Beer NYC. Hazy golden amber pour with a thin white head. The nose is sweet and hoppy. Lots of citrus and some tropical fruit. Assertively bittered with a nice fresh finish. Slight marmalade notes. Tasty.

Local NY beer on tap at The Ginger Man. Accesible soft bitterness IPA, with hints of wheat bread and sweet malts. Aroma was good but went away really quick, thin white lace, good carbonation. Refreshing but not as astringent as it could be.

Half growler at GrandCru beer and cheese. A solid showing for another NY brewery that I had not heard of. Piney nose and body. Stacatto hop bite then warming tones of hop infused grassiness. That little bottle went fast. Lots of nice lacing left behind.

Sampled at the brewpub - Nice hoppy nose, piney and citrus. Sweet, bready malts with some caramel. Finishes dry and with a bit too much astringency. But very fresh and resinous hops.

Really grat, thick, solid head -- like hop cream! Light amber color. Big citrus hop aroma. Very hoppy flavor, quite bitter. Solid IPA.

Tapnat Stagshead. Pours copper with white head that dissipates quickly. Nose of grapefruit and resin. Quite hoppy mostly of grapefruit, some pine, resin, vanilla, grass, some herbs. Quite drying and pretty bitter. Not bad

NYC Trip Beer #19. Hit up Mugs Alehouse in Williamsburg to grab a few last beers and watch the Kentucky Derby. Pours Amber with a grassy scent. Far too bitter in taste for me. Very average mouthfeel. Meh. Draft - Mugs Alehouse - Brooklyn, NY

UPDATED: DEC 1, 2013 Draft at Mugs Ale House, where it was called Otherwise, not Other Side - I am guessing this is the same thing. Also had some at the Bronx Ale House. Apparently it won a recent competition (local IPAs?) at Mugs. There is lots of pine in this fresh and well-balanced brew. Full-flavored, and with some nice floral notes, but there is also some metallic bitterness in the finish. Good overall.

1/6 keg from Port Jeff Beverage. Pours cloudy dark gold with puffy cream head, lasts medium length. Hoppy all throughout with a seamless transition into tart grapefruit finish. Undertone of dry malt and wood hops. Thetart sweetness, usually not to my taste, is balanced well by the hops and makes for a drinkable enjoyable beer.
