Crit (2213), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Apr 4, 2008 As an Abbey Dubbel, this absolutely sucks. As a Flemish Sour , which it is, it is slightly better.
Deep brown, tan head. Metallic fruity astringent nose.
Fizzy, somewhat tart winey profile, lacks sweetness needed for a dubbel.
Light hop bitterness in finish
DuffMan (1868), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Jul 14, 2008 I know, I know, this is a specialty product for those who cannot enjoy beer made with the gluten-rich traditional ingredients. Well, I’d be switching to wine pretty quickly if this is the best that is available for those with celiac disease! Nice appearance-- clear mahogany, but no lasting head of any kind. Aroma is of sour apple juice. Flavour is of green apples, wilted leaf lettuce, and some brown sugar (although the brown sugar is quite subtle), The finish is astringent, with a tea-like tannic acid quality. Thin and watery. It gets points for at least trying, but really this is pretty aweful stuff. thegreenrooster (1439), St.louis, Missouri, USA Jun 28, 2008 Pour is a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroms is lots of vinegar and very red wine like. Flavor is dark malts with a super sourness. Not close to what the style should be as this is way to sour. Again they were practily giving this away at the W&C place in STL for $1.69 so i could not pass it up. If you see this on sale for $5 this is a waste of money. thedm (3405), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jun 26, 2008 This bottled brew from Indianapolis, IN marked BBF 05/04/09 poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized light brown colored mostly diminisahing bubbles that left behind a transparent heavily carbonated dark brown colored body and an excellent lacing. The aroma was mildly like old shoes. The mouth feel was tingly bubbly and soda pop like in its palate. The flavor was of cocoa cola syrup sweet dark malts and slightly strangely off the mark. Very different but not much to my liking. dyetube (366), Dallas, Texas, USA Jun 9, 2008 This beer pours black with a thick tan head leaving some good lacing down the sides. The nose is spices and malt. The flavor is a little to lively for a dubble if you ask me, although I kinda like it. Not really that bad when you consider this is brewed with no malt and no wheat. Cheers! biz82 (1299), austin, Texas, USA Jun 5, 2008 Clear dark red, little head. Strange, tart, red wine like aroma. Spritzy palate with a tangy, fruity and slightly tannic flavor. Tastes very much like some extract homebrew from the 90’s to me. I wonder if this is made with extracts of gluten free grains. Actually rather interesting if not something I would revisit soon.
