I am a sucker for old traditional Helle and discovering new ones. This is so decently a good Helle and it has the decency to remain so unremarkable in it’s design and marketing. German brewing sometimes need no strings to be attached.

50cl bb06/2016, maruhn. - Fizzy beige yellow pour, macropores. Strawy aroma, getting lots of rice waffles here (Alnatura Reiswaffel to be precise), maybe some fancier almond husks. First straw in taste, then delivered on ebullient waves of heavy carbonation, again: those musty fart waffles made of rice. Odd, if probably natural. What is not: aftertaste of bitter sweet cardboard and soaked cornflakes. Might revisit in situ, on tapu.

Bottle. Clear pale golden color, small white head. Grainy, cereal aroma. Sweet taste, medium bitter. Medium to thick body, lower carbonation. Very malty, cereal aftertaste.

Draft at the brewery during day 2 of the Bamberg Jolly of January 2014. Pours perfectly clear yellow-gold with a big, frothy white head. Lightly effervescent. Gorgeous beer. Good sweetness, nice cereal notes, some meringue, light bitter straw. Light bodied with average carbonation. Crispy finish with moderately sweet cereal, further bitter straw, creamy meringue. Excellent lager.

0,5l Flasche.

I have been not-so-slowly working my way through a case of this, getting to know it. It’s a fine example of why it sounds silly when people say they think Helles is boring. It doesn’t have to be boring. Maybe YOU’RE boring buddy. Maybe that’s the problem. Clear and pale gold, vanilla-like grainy scent with grassy edges, lightly sweet taste with a moderate earthy bitterness and mineral tang. OK, honest? So it’s not my favorite. But I keep reaching for it automatically when I just want a nice beer without having to think about beer. This is beer that tastes of beer. Is that boring? Shut up.

Bottle. Light gold with a thin head. Aroma is bready malt. Flavour is stone, bread and malts on a long doughy finish- .

Bottle from Getränke Kistner in Forchheim. The beer pours out in a clear golden colour with steady head and medium body. Aroma of mild hosp and straw. Taste of hops, white bread, straw, mild fruits and malt. Easy drinkable, yet nothing special.
