A reddish brown coloured beer with a thick off-white head. Rich malty nose, chocolate, coffee, caramel, and i also got a hint of tea! Just a tiny hint of dry hops in the background. A medium mouthfeel, for the strength. The taste is again rich and malty, dark caramel, coffee, liquorice and dark chocolate, yet very smooth. Belies its strength! The finish is smooth and malty. (Cask - 2007 Cambridge Beer Festival).

Cask (handpump) at the Gribble Inn, Oving, West Sussex, February 2006. Not particularly dark - mid brown with a reddish tinge - but a decent old ale. Slightly woody and vinous on the nose with a faint, volatile, petrolly element. Lightish mouthfeel with some licorice and more vinous character. Sour edge on the finish. The unusual solvent and resin notes persist on the palate, but don’t really detract too much from the overall impression. Decent strength.
