COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double has undergone two fermentations, which gives this ale a chocolatey, toffee taste with a warming brandy-like finish.

Brown as it should be, sweet malty fruity, raisins, nutty with a light spiciness, body suprisingly thin. I could liken it to a brown ale fermented with belgian yeast, or just a light version of a abbey dubbel. Not too bad and won’t kick your butt.

From the bottle.

Pours a translucent deep red-brown with a modest light-brown head. The aroma is heavily on the malt, a slight hint of rye. The flavor offers an almost soda-pop malt sweetness (the mouthfeel too is heavily carbonated, like a cola), relatively faint hints of yeast, a mild grassy hops bittering out the finish.

This is an entirely unoffensive beer, but it is too pedestrain to qualify as an exceptionally good one.

Aromas are reminiscent of a Scotch Ale. Definitely has a toffee/candy backbone with some earthy/peat/wood undercurrents and a touch of dark fruit. Appearance is very dark with a slight reddish tint. Head is frothy and dies down quickly leaving some nice lacing on the glass. Flavor is quite different than expected. Much more of a sour character than I saw coming. There is definitely a toffee structure and some fruit. Really nicely balanced and comes together well.

Bottle. Pours deep mahogany with a large beige head. The aroma is wood, sour berries, and a little bit of chocolate. The flavor is subtle, with wood and a bit of fruit at first, giving way to chocolate and a slight dry toffee note in the finish. The aftertaste doesn’t linger at all.

Poured a clear ruby with a fizzy off-white head. Aroma of cloves, some bubble gum sweetness, dark fruits. Flavor starts sweet with a cinnamony-spicy dark fruit flavor and finishes slightly dry. Body is somewhat light. All in all somewhat simple but certainly inoffensive.

Bottled. (BB 22/8-06) Dark reddish-brown, carbonating beer, with a large, dense, creamy beige head. Weak aroma of dried fruits, some alcohol and spices, and caramel. Round, balanced flavor with sweetness from caramel and raisins, a hint of roasted malt and spices. Nice body and a pleasant finish. Maybe a bit on the sweet side, this one. (060608)

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2007 Bottle. Pretty dark almandine body with a thick lasting very foamy head. Very attractive beer! Nose-big Belgian spice (banana, etc) with a little stale hops backing it up. Taste-dark candi sugar, sweet, light flavors from the yeast consisting of banana, apple, clove, and a pinch of molasses, toffee, light scorched caramel, a hint of dark spice (anise, etc.). Very well done and surprisingly well crafted. None of the flavors really step on each other as they sometimes do in doubles, and at the same time, none of the flavors dominate. It isn’t too big and sticky but isn’t timid either. Very well done and highly recommended.

Re-rate-Very much like a mixture of 25% Port and 75% Chardonnay. Very, very white wine like.

A rich ale, with lots of sweetness. Toffee, fruit, almost coca cola. A little bitter finish rounds this off in a splendid way.

Think of it as a robust English nut brown ale with strong hints of a traditional belgium ale. Clear redish brown appearance, leaves on the nose, medium body, slight molasses flavor. Not as eggy as most traditional belgium beers.

(Tap) Had at the International Beer Fest in Hamburg, Germany. Pours tan/brown with a tan head. Smells overly sweet, but the taste was balanced very well. Caramel and toffee notes were predominent. Aftertaste was a little on the sweet side. Overall one of my favorites of the fest.
