Double has undergone two fermentations, which gives this ale a chocolatey, toffee taste with a warming brandy-like finish.

Smells like straight alcohol. Tastes way better than it smells. Toffee and raisen taste. Don’t really care for Belgians but this one isn’t bad.

330ml bottle served in a snifter around 6 degrees: Pours a liquorish and very dark copper robe with deep fiery highlights. The head is about one finger thick with a slight tan and semi-frothy structure. Retention is minimal and you are soon left with a spotted layer of foam and very little lacing. As for carbonation, it is almost absent. The nose is mostly sweet and liquorish giving hints of caramel, sugar cane and brandy. There is a solvant/alcohol backbone to the aroma of this beer I thought gave it a good punch, but that’s maybe because I work in a lab with chemicals all day. Taking a sip, you get a blend of sugar, caramel malts and alcohol, giving you this brandy element once again. The brew has a fair amount of corpus but I still felt it to be (too) aqueous. It finishes quite abruptly with all that sweetness just fading away at warp 9 with no aftertaste. Overall this brew is enjoyable. I like the style and appearance but I think that with just a little more density, this brew would be awesome. I’d say it was a good try. Cheers!

Not a bad dubbel, very heavy on the sugar and fruit notes though. Would be a bit better if it wasn’t so one noted.

Reddish brown looks, light head leaves to the sides. Aroma has dried fruits, red forest berries and sweet malts. Some yeast too. Taste starts with yeast, dried fruits and red berries. Slight tannin note in the middle. After warming up, some chocolate pops up. Medium body with medium-to-low carbonation. A pretty decent dubbel.

Tasted from bottle and tap as Grimbergen Dubbel, the classic Grimbergen abbey beer since the fifties. Brownish bronze ale with off-white head and weakish, sweetish aroma of caramelly malts, peach, orange peel, iron, sweet taste, caramel again, a bit metallic, smooth, restrained fruitiness and some spiciness, nutty accent and light bitterish finish but not really hoppy - the sweetness remains dominant. Admittedly a little bit better than that awful Leffe Brune, but still way too sweet, bland and boring. I have the impression this is more and more being replaced by the somewhat more interesting and more complex Grimbergen Optimo Bruno lately.

Smells like sweet fruit. Dark with tan thin head, very winey flavor, interesting palate, slightly sweet on the aftertaste, some bread. Really nice!
