From a dwarf sized 12 fl. oz bottle marked: 1502QL0465A. Pours a very dark brown with a little bit of ruby red when held to the light. Creamy, beige head that stays for the entire session. Aroma of malts, hops, and nuts. The taste is extremely sweet like honey, caramel, or sugar. Yummy! I liked this one a whole lot.

Warm, creamy, sweet, malt and chocolate at the same time. Sweet like sugar. On tap at Cafe Hollander in Milwaukee.

I had a smaller bottle of this a few years ago and don’t remember it impressing me much one way or the other. This is a 750ml bottle (I’ve noticed the Chimays are better in larger bottles, too). Light brown color, small, short-lasting head, but appears to be highly carbonated. Aroma is raisin and chocolate, but very light. Carbonation is less than it would appear to be, chocolate and raisin continue in the flavor, with enough hops to balance the sweetness. The alcohol in both aroma and flavor is happily less than I expected. Excellent brown ale, Belgian or otherwise.

This beer is vastly underrated. A notch below the Trappist beers, but definitely an outstanding Belgian dubbel.

dark-brown colour, large white head. A bit sweet, mild, with a metallic aftertaste.

UPDATED: NOV 11, 2011 Bottle in Tolosa. Masterpiece. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, butter, dark fruit, and apple. Taste is sweet and bitter, with long length. Palate is syrupy, and full bodied. Dark brown, with a frothy head. Previous rating: 2009 Tap. It’s good, but not the best dubbel I had. Caramel in the aroma, and a sweet flavour with lingering bitterness. It’s thin and watery in the palate. Dark red colour, with a white and long-lasting head.

Lovely dubbel, dark bitter sweet, fresh & fruity, liked it very much. Same quality as the more famous blonde.

Hazy copper/brown beer with an off-white head. Aromas of toffee, caramel, and candy sugars mixed with fruit. Tastes of Belgian candy sugars, some toffee, sweet caramel, even some honey, and dark fruits. Earthy flavors are there as well mixing with sweet boozy goodness. Finish is boozy sweet and somewhat fruity. The alcohol warms and develops the other flavors quite nicely. Easy to drink and enjoy. What an awesome beer.

Grimbergen Double has a very thick, beige, pillowy head and a fairly clear, reddish-brown, bubbly appearance, with lots of heavy lacing left behind. The aroma is very fruity, spiced, sweet, and bready. The flavor is of sugary, spiced, bread crust, with a subdued bitterness in the background. The mouthfeel is between light and medium, and Grimbergen Dubbel finishes semi-dry, mellow, and highly drinkable. Overall, this is a very enjoyable beer, and I rate it most excellent. RJT

April 11, 2014. On tap at Town Crier. Lovely warm dark brown colour with a dense thin off-white head. Aromas of spice, raisins, toffee, with those flavour as well. Quite nice, especially after starting with a Fuller’s Black Cab Stout.
