2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
UPDATED: APR 23, 2016 As Grimbergen Blanche, bottle from an Albert Heijn supermarket. I still feel a bit uncomfortable with this brand, claiming to be genuine Belgian abbey beers, but being brewed in France due to a string of take-overs in the mass-marketed beer industry - but then, it’s only Grimbergen, I shouldn’t mind that this is technically not really Belgian anymore. Medium thick, creamy, lacing, eggshell-coloured head over a misty yellowish straw blonde beer with greenish hue - could not look more like a classic witbier. Aroma is very soapy, bath foam even, along with hints of banana bubblegum, coriander seed, mandarin, sweet apple juice, pear, honey, some vague straw, gypsum, rose water and ladies’ perfume. Fruity onset, lots of sweet isoamylacetate (banana-flavored bubblegum) with notes of sourish gooseberry and candied lemon, citrus freshness but in an artificial, essential oil kind of way, spritzy carbo but fit for the style, very soapy middle phase (wheat) with some bready malt sweetness while the perfumey citrus effect and the banana effect persist, coriander soapiness added in the finish but fortunately not exaggeratedly so, sweetish and sourish citrus effect keeps dominating and get the last word, with a vague lemonade-like connotation; hops are only present for structure but provide not a trace of even the slightest earthy bitterness which could have made this a lot better. In this form: clearly another ’generic’ Hoegaarden epigone, aimed at a large audience; admittedly it has a kind of refreshing citrus effect, but in a somewhat artificial manner, and the banana sweetness keeps accompanying the whole flavor trail even till after swallowing the last drop. Too sweet, soapy to the point where it becomes ridiculous, not spicy enough and superficial: I guess this could appeal to the ardent Hoegaarden fan, but even within its narrow style, this is too one-sided and too sweet for my tooth. For one time only, I kind of miss the coriander overload, this one emphasizes bland sweetness with lemonade-like citric acidity, and - even for the style - lacks a hoppy presence at the back. Witbier as a whole is not my preferred style to begin with but even in comparison with the countless epigones Hoegaarden’s success has spawned in the eighties and nineties, this is not its best representative.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Közepes, nem túl tartós hab, homályos, szalmasárga szín. Illata nem túl intenzív, búzás, banános, citrusos. Íze szokásos búzás, banán, citrus, pici fűszer, közepesen szénsavas, viszont hiányzik belőle egy kis selymesség, karcos, durva, közepesen testes sör.

On tap. Hazy yellow, medium head. Faint aroma of coriander, which is dominating the taste. Lemon notes are also present. Bit too low carbonation. Average wit.
