Grovlam (3198), Copenhagen, Denmark Dec 9, 2006 Bottle. Classic Abbey Dubbel, and what a Dubbel it was. Dark brown in colour with a sparkling look to it. Head was off-white and medium. Didn’t last that long. Aroma was clear caramel/toffee, roasted, spicy, yeast, maybe some fig/plum/dry fruit. Not much hops to detect. But still very balanced. Flavour was medium sweet. Medium bodied with a sweet caramel roasted like finish. Great Dubbel.
hombrepalo (506), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 8, 2008 On tap @ Maproom. Clear dark ruby, almost a burgundy appearance, with a large-bubbled sandy head which subsides into a frothy layer with a few bubbles peaking through. The taste is very sweet with notes of brown sugar and caramel. Has some slight spicy notes on the palate. Overall a bit soft but decent beer.
santoslhalper (189), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 5, 2008 On tap at Union Jack’s. Clear brown body with reddish hues and a thin off white head. Fig, grape, raisin, date, plum, apple, pear and olive nose. Clean, clear grape taste with dates, dark fruits, peaches, apples, and some spice. nbutler11 (218), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Oct 1, 2008 Pours a rich mahogony from the tap with a soapy brown head. Smells and tastes of sweet malts, brown sugar, caramel, and slight cream. Respectable body with a great taste. A tad too sweet for multiple rounds, though. EFC1878 (82), Manchester, Greater Manchester, England Oct 1, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown/ruby colour with generous off-white head. Fruit and yeast in the aroma. Sweet fruity flavour with a slightly sour finish. Nice balanced body. Would benefit from being bottle conditioned and I’ll be on the lookout for the draught. I won’t be chilling the next one as much. masonjer (452), Holt, Michigan, USA Oct 1, 2008 Thanks to daknole for the chance to try this. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much, not a huge fan of dubbels I guess. But this turned out to be quite enjoyable. Poured a deep copper/red color. Tiny dissipating head. Raisins and dark fruit on the nose. Taste was much the same, with some banana and a finish that wasn’t overly sweet, which was nice. They struck a nice balance with this one. Not crazy complex, but not cloying or syrupy either. I gave points here for keeping it simple and straight forward.
