Davros (1024) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - SEP 28, 2011
Pours dark amber/ruby with a large, lasting head. Nose shows chocolate, port-like notes, sultanas and brown sugar, along with a healthy dose of candi sugar. Similarly sweet flavours, although it quickly dries out. There’s lots more candi sugar and golden syrup along with more sultanas/dried fruit. A bit over the top. The alcohol is pretty noticeable too, almost harsh. Carbonation is way over the top, but at the same time it’s needed to cut through the sweetness.

Bottle. Clear amber pour with a lasting foamy beige head. Aroma is a little thin with notes of caramel, raisins, currants and chocolate. Flavour is more substantial but still tame for a beer of this strength, with plenty of malty caramel and dried fruit plus hints of grass and nuts. Mouthfeel is a little oily with lively carbonation and a lingering sweet finish. OK but nothing special.

bottle at restaurant ’de gastro’ in Bruges, dark brown colour with small and unstable white head. Smell: some industrial, toffee, alcohol. Taste: alcohol, sugar .. much too sweet, has some industrial flavour, and is too heavy. Very unpleasant .. not my style!

hawthorne00 (1439) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JUL 30, 2011
Bottle. Clear brown with a coat of cream head that lasts OK. Aroma of dark sugars, hard spices, prunes, port. Taste is sweet with stewed fruits, fortified wine. Drying bitterness at the end with mild spices. Alcohol pretty well hidden. Lifeless mouthfeel, but it’s not particularly syrupy. A bit more carbonation might have helped. Nothing offensive about it, but surely a beer this strong shouldn’t be this dull.
