3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ernest (5187) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 16, 2012
Bottle.
Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is medium to dark brown.
Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie, toasted bread, husks), lightly hoppy (herbs), with a light note of honey, hint of DMS.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Smells like some melanoidin is in here, which is super neato, but there are some rough aspects (husky-vegetal) as well. Still, the nose is mostly enjoyable. In the mouth it’s just too syrupy sweet, esp. for the style; it really needs more snap/bittterness.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 wchesser (338) - Denver, Colorado, USA - APR 15, 2012
Dark caramel brown in the glass with a little fading head. Not much of anything on the nose, but not offensive either...maybe some chocolate malt and breadiness (this was out of a stein). Chocolately malt with some spice on the finish, medium-full body. This would be a great summer BBQ beer. I love their labels too. Another solid effort from Grimm.

picked up bottle at local liquor storeTasted bottle. Poured a reddish brown. It had the aroma of caramel, toffee, and toasted malts. I got hints of caramel when tasting it. It was sweeter than I had it imagined it to be but overall I thought it was a good American take on a dunkel.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 drjay44 (1735) - Salida, Colorado, USA - MAR 31, 2012
650 ml. bottle. Pours aa medium, lasting beige head, with some lacing, over a clear, dark amber (SRM 17) body....nose is light bread, medium roasted malts with light caramel/toffee....taste is medium roasted malts, light hints of sweet caramel, light cocoa, finishing with a light bitterness......mouth feel light of medium, carbonation low. This meets the style of a Dunkel Lager very nicely. The appearance, aromas and flavors are right on for this dark, but not heavy roasted malt dominated style. The hop bitterness is barely present, leading to the hints of sweetness which emphasizes the cocoa/chocolate tones of the malts. BJCP 7/3/13/4/7

Tasted bottle, thanks to adnielsen. Pours a reddish brown with a off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, biscuit, and toasted malts. Biscuit and caramel flavors. I think it’s a pretty good American version of a dunkel, although doesn’t quite live up to German dunkels.
