Grštzer is another lost style, this beer originated in Poland and was a wheat and pilsner based beer that had an intense smoke aroma and flavor from smoking the malt over oak. In addition to the smoke the beer was bitter and had a pronounced hop flavor and aroma. Grimm Brothers has developed Sooty Brother in a similar fashion. Sooty Brother is composed of Wheat and Pilsner malt which has been smoked over oak and cherry wood. (Thank you Bottle Cap Bar-B-Que) Hopped with Noble German hops to give us a beer that has an intense smoke flavor accompanied by the floral bouquet of the hops. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

UPDATED: NOV 24, 2012 Tap @ brewery. Moderately hazy, golden yellow appearance with a touch of brown and a cream colored head. Mild to moderate BBQ smoky, woody, mild wheat, slight veggie aroma, though the veggie smell isnít a hint of an off taste but more something from the smoking of the malts. Initially a light wheat, smooth flavor that develops into a BBQ smoky taste as the beer progresses through the mouth along with a little floral hoppiness. Some of the burnt, woody characteristics come through towards the finish. Roasty, slightly burnt, a touch aftertaste. Very easy drinking beer. The smoke characteristics are more like BBQ smokiness than a charred smokiness. Very tasty beer and again itís really awesome that these guys are bringing back some old styles and being pretty innovative. (4.1)

Bottle @ Exira Beer Summit III. Picked up at Wilburís Fort Collins. The aroma and flavor donít have nearly as much BBQ or meat smoke as last time I had it on tap last year. Kind of a more burnt woody flavor. The carbonation and wheat malts seem to be a bit more dominant this time. Still a fun beer to drink, but not as good as last time. (3.7)

Hazy golden pour - sweet baby Jesus this is some smoky shit - nose of intense smoke and not much else, aside from some semisweet malt - smells like an intense campfire - soft carbonation and medium body - strong smoke character, but none of the acidity or astringency that sometimes plagues smoked beers - dry maltiness - slight unwelcome acidity, but otherwise awesome - canít remember the last time I had an American beer that used smoked malt so well - fucking tasty.

22oz bottle pours a hazy, straw yellow with some sudsy white head. Nose is nice, cold smoke, inviting ash character, salty, lemon, dried hay, wheat chaff. Flavor is lightly sweet, lightly lemony, lightly smokey, a little truffle, spritzy, mineral water. Finishes clean and refreshing. Very nice.

effervescent gold, translucent. Hay manure nose, lightly dusty, rounded smoke profile. Flavor similar, smoke throughout, citrus cutting mid before the smoke returns in the end. Balanced and refreshing with just enough smoke.

Clear golden with a thin white head. Aroma is kinda meaty with notes of salted pork and greasy smoke. Flavor is clean and balanced, between smokiness and malty sweetness. In truth, it tastes like a smoked blonde ale. Gentle greasy smokiness, mixed with an earthy pale malt grain flavor. Slight sausage tone on the finish. Overall a bit light but itís exactly where it needs to be--any stronger and it would be gross. Gentle noble hop bitterness throughout.

650 ml. bottle. Pours a medium well retained off white head over a slightly hazy gold (SRM 5) body....nose is cereal, malt light smoke....taste is light smoke, cereal, leading to a light sour bite with light hop bitterness....mouth feel medium, carbonation adds a pleasant fizz. This meets this archaic style quite well , It has a medium smokiness with a pleasant sour finish and is quit enjoyable. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7

Bomber poured a clear gold with a lasting off white head. Aromas of smoke, bread, fruittiness and light yeast. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of smoke, biscuit and light fruittiness with a crisp dry lingering smokey finish.
