4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 sanborn13 (4) - Hebron, Maine, USA - FEB 8, 2012 does not count
This is the second great stout in a week. Last week was Sebago Brewing’s Lake Trout Stout and this week is Gritty’s Black Fly Stout. 2 great stouts, each with a truly unique Maine name. Great black color with thick tan head and huge bubbles with solid retention. Just from the look of this one you know it is going to be good. Aroma is slightly sweet with some fruit in there and taste is exactly what a stout should be. Full bodied, smooth, well carbonated and just a great example of what a stout should be. Plenty of roasted smoke flavor to start and a slightly sweet chocolate finish. If you have a choice between Gritty’s Black Fly Stout and Sebago’s Lake Trout Stout, buy them both and enjoy!!

Very dark brown with a medium creamy head. Sweet roasty aroma, and roasty flavor. Very very creamy and thick; thickest beer I’ve ever had. Tasty.

Bottle in a wine glass. Pours black with a lacy, light tan head. Aroma of light roasted malts, a little chocolate, and some light hops. Flavor the same. Average texture, a little light. A decent beer.

Draft at the brewpub, part of a sampler. Pours a dark brown color with a creamy tan head that leaves some lace. Best looking beer of the bunch. Nice roasty aroma with some sugar and toast. Flavor of rich roasted malts, dark chocolate, and faint burnt toast. Light-bodied, toasty, and dry with moderate carbonation. Decent session stout, if a bit one-dimensional.

On tap at the Pony Bar, NYC. Not quite up to the level of Sixpoint’s Otis, which was the other session stout I became obsessed with on my most recent visit, but this one was a competent and pleasant rendition of the style. Hefty, silky, and creamy pour, with plenty of smooth foam atop a chalky body. Mouthfeel was oh so nice, with a papery, at times even gritty finish that well suits the style. Flavors were just a hint ashy here and there, but overall nicely in the bittersweet cocoa and roasted malts zone, understatedly so.
2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 beerbill (2847) - Laurel, New York, USA - APR 6, 2011
22 oz. bottle. Pours black with a moderate tan head that lasted through mid-glass and left ample lace. Pleasant aroma of malt, cocoa and a bit of rum. The flavor starts out fine with malt, mild tobacco, and just a bit of cocoa. Then, a vinegary alcohol flavor moves in and adds an unwelcomed twang. If I have another opportunity, I’d like to try this one again sometime.
