VSA is an Extra Special golden ale that’s light in color but full-bodied, with a snappy hop finish. A bit of extra time in the conditioning tank rounds out and mellows the ale.

12 oz. version, which is filtered, is brewed at Shipyard Brewing in Portland; 22 oz. version, which is not filtered and only sold locally, is brewed at Gritty McDuff’s in Freeport

On tap at the brewpub. It pours a clear, golden body under a minimal sized white head. The aroma is weak but pleasant, with fruity hops dominating. Flowery notes and some bread. It’s very smooth in the mouth, with a soft carbonation level. Some bitterness, but not much. Fruity finish with a faint malty touch. Easy drinkable, quenching. 150609

Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt and hint of citrus. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with a long malty and slightly citrus finish. Body is light, texture is thin, carbonation is soft.

This beer needs a vacation! Average dark gold pour w/ a thin tan head & decent lacing. The aroma is of remotely sweet malt. The taste rather bland & boring up front & then finishes w/ a strange bitterness. Doesn’t have a good mouthfeel either & overall a poor brew that isn’t worth your time!

Poured golden in color with a bubbly white head. Pale malt, straw, lemon, grassy hops on the nose. Highly carbonated and thin. Nothing to write home about.

Bottle. Clear golden pour with a small bubbly white head. Very sweet grains - almost syrupy without the syrupy texture on the palate. Hint of metal. Meh.

22 oz. bottle from Epsom Circle Market. Aroma is faint--a bit like beer that sat out all night or that someone vomited. Appearance is hazy light gold with massive off-white foamy head (actually a little annoying because it took so long to go away) with foamy lacing. Taste is similarly lacking though not mildly aversive like the aroma. Mildly bitter. Palate is light bodied with thin texture and soft-flat carbonation. Finish is mercifully brief. Overall, this is not a good beer. Perhaps I had a bad one? I can’t imagine any place calling itself a craft brewer would put this out--I’d rather have a Miller Genuine Draft or a Michelob. If someone hands you one, make sure it is ice cold. Avoid.

Draft at the brewpub in Freeport. Clear amber. Wheat aroma with light citrus. The taste adds floral hops and lemon with resin. The mouthfeel is clean with a bit of syrup too. Not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Purchased in their mixed pack on my trip to Maine. Pours a clean golden-amber colour with big bubble carbonation. Frothy white head with good lacing. Big grain nose with honey hints. The grain is there in the taste, but with some decent hops balancing things. A nice cereal malt summer ale.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance had a clear amber/blonde body with some slowly rising carbonation filling an exceptionally foamy, lumy white head with light spotty lacing. The head lasted for about three minutes, light rings were left in the wake as the beer went down The smell had some breadiness, lemon and malts. The taste was bitter through previously mentioned flavors. On the palate, it sat at/about a light, sessionable, crisp, dry aftertaste and finish. Overall, I’ve had this a numerous amount of times on tap and out of a bottle. This is good for the style and for me.

Dark golden colored ale. Minimal head. Nice hops aftertaste. Medium body. Pours somewhat thick. Very nice overall.
