VSA is an Extra Special golden ale that’s light in color but full-bodied, with a snappy hop finish. A bit of extra time in the conditioning tank rounds out and mellows the ale.

12 oz. version, which is filtered, is brewed at Shipyard Brewing in Portland; 22 oz. version, which is not filtered and only sold locally, is brewed at Gritty McDuff’s in Freeport

Draught at the brewpub. Hazy golden colour. Very small white head. The flavour has some paper, a little grain, but not so bad. Hint of earth.

A: snifter. pours a dark golden straw color with great clarity. nice white head on top. decent head retention. fair lacing. S: a bittersweet aroma. some hay and slight metallic tones. some fruit characteristics, but nothing specific. T: really bitter and not very summer-like. metallic finish. the hop flavors are just bitter, with no presence other than that. way in the back of this is a sweetness, but the bitters seems to ruin it. It reminds me of a sweet heineken. M: dry and metallic. decent carbonation level. palate is too confusing. D: not doing this one again. summer equals refreshing, and this beer is not for me.

initial rusty metal taste dissapates into a smooth and substantial taste of vegeatable with a nondescript sweetness. at this time some malt and a hop like flavor can be discerned. light tropical fruit flavor way at the end adds a bit of interest to this otherwise almost decent brew.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy amber gold with a 1/4 inch white layer of froth.

Aroma: Koschy husky yeast and pez candy.

Taste: Spicy yeast, dry almost hidden malt and spicy Euro hop finish. Ever so slight fruit notes up front.

Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation, a little juicy and watery.

Overall: Solid drinkable, session beer.

Bottle. Pours gold with an off white head. Sweetish malty aroma with some herbal notes. The flavor has sweet toffee and crystal malts with some herbal notes. Meh.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of diacetyl, sweet malt, and grain. Poured yellow/gold in color with a large, creamy, dense, off-white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. A few large particles. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of diacetyl, sweet malt, cereal, bread, and grain. Medium body. Lightly dry texture. Diacetyl, sweet malt, cereal, and grain finish is lightly dry.

This is a good beer. The label is pretty sweet. Good Summer drinking makes me want to go to a ball game and eat a hot dog.

Serving: Draft from the Great Lost Bear
It pours a pale gold with a small foamy white head. The nose is grainy with a bit of corn. The flavor is light and grainy with a strong bitterness. It reminds me of an over grained pils in a way. Light in body with a lengthy, bitter finish. Unfortunately this one just doesn’t cut it for me as a refreshing summertime brew.

From a bottle poured an amber color with a fair amount of head. Malty grassy flavor with a quick finish.

Yep, pours average orange with a little Average white lacing. Citrus, sour milk, grassy average aroma. Tastes very average of malt and hops. This was very non discript average /amateur beer. Can’t say I hate it but would probably avoid ordering again.
