COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
VSA is an Extra Special golden ale that’s light in color but full-bodied, with a snappy hop finish. A bit of extra time in the conditioning tank rounds out and mellows the ale.

12 oz. version, which is filtered, is brewed at Shipyard Brewing in Portland; 22 oz. version, which is not filtered and only sold locally, is brewed at Gritty McDuff’s in Freeport

Pours a beautiful golden color with a medium-sized white head. This dissipated to a rind around the edge of my beer glass and hung around while I drank it. The aroma is definitely dominated by the hops. It’s an almost sour smell with hints of fresh-cut grass and citrus. The taste is definitely dominated by the hops as well, which is different than many other summer ales out there. The taste overall is bitter with a hint of lemon or grapefruit, but definitely not on the sweet side like many other summer brews available. I liked finding something quite different than most of the offerings this time of the year, even if the medium-high level of carbonation threw me a bit. It gives the beer an almost artificial feel to the finish, although there’s a good kick there as it goes down. The aftertaste is definitely on the bitter side.

Light and crisp with a hint of hops in the finish. Light and mild. A little thin overall, but better than a macro brew.

ROGUE (1360) - Newark, Delaware, USA - SEP 2, 2011
12oz bottle. pours a clear orangish amber color with a big off white head. Aroma is light sweet butterscotch with a slight spicey hop background. The butterscotch sweetness flavor comes first but is followed quickly by a hit of hops bitterness, along with a hint of citrus in the background and a dry light finish. Light, refreshing body with moderate to strong carbonation.

Draft in a sampler at the brewpub. Pours a clear bright gold color with no head. Aroma of pale and sweet malts, straw, faint fruit and floral hops. Flavor was pretty much the same. Light-bodied, with moderate-low carbonation and a sweet, malty mouthfeel. Very basic beer. Something called ’Vacationland’ should be more exciting.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear yellow with a short but thick white head. Unappealing corn-like aroma. Uninspiring light malt flavor with some lemon. Watery texture and a weak, unremarkable finish. Take a vacation from Vacationland.

Draught @ Brewpub: This one poured a golden color. There was a small white head that leaves some lacing. Some floral, spicy and light citrus notes to the nose. Some malt sweetness also. Taste is a touch dry with a very light bitterness. Almost a medium body. Some malts, earthiness, slight spice. A decent summer brew.

Tihs poured a clear yellow color with a white head. Aroma was light musty german hops and some sweet malt character. Flavor was a bit bland, a tiny bit of lemon zest and sweet malt. Eh.

Bottle. Clear golden with white head. Aromas of cereal, lemon, herbs. Flavors of cereal, lemon, herbs, butter. Balanced finish with hop bitterness in back of palate. Medium-thin body with firm mouthfeel and moderate carbonation.

12oz bottle in a shaker. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma of pale malts, a hint of caramel, and some light hops. Nothing really stands out about this beer. Average texture. An ok beer.

Bottle. Aroma is buttery with a bit of hops. Pours a golden color with good carbonation and a thin white head. Taste is light malt, butter, citrus, and then the hop bitterness at the end. Medium body. This is a nice ale that is easy to drink with maybe a bit more hop character than other blondes I’ve had. The flavor is similar to all other Grittys ales but much lighter. I like all of their beers.
