There's something about the aroma of this beer that is repulsive. However, the taste doesn't reflect that. It is VERY smoky, but there are no off flavours. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Red pour from 12oz bottle in Banff. Carmel, syrup and malts. Not offensive but nothing I'd want to have again. Their red IPA blows this away, had back to back

341 ml bottle from a six-pack from Sobeys Liquor, served in a tall, stemmed goblet. Love the name: Rutting Elk...it doesn’t get more Canadian...except, perhaps, for Tree Brewing’s Thirsty Beaver...and Molson Canadian, natch. Pours a deep reddish-amber cola-ish shade, with a fairly creamy-looking tancap that leaves lace patches. Nose holds toasted malt, mildly sweet, with some Big Three Cs (cocoa, coffee, caramel) notably present, and a little aromatic woody hops. Just a whiff of vinous fruit, too. Taste is pleasantly berry-ish, with soft, warm mulling spice accompanying, and a malt toast backbone supported by light cocoa and coffee, and the caramel’s not overwhelming, leaving plenty of space for the subtler elements. Has a moderately chewy mouthfeel and sweet/dry/brief finish. A shade less complex than similar ales, but well-balanced and a pleasure to drink.
