3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Nickls (1297) - SE DC, Washington DC, USA - JUN 4, 2010
(Old BA rate - bottle)
Poured with a cap of slightly off-white, thick and dense looking head; murky darker brown color. Red grapes; touch sour; some yeastiness. Much sweeter than suggested by the aroma; plums; a bit of candied sugar (not too much though); Lighter to Medium body overall; vibrant and prickly carbonation; touch dry in the finish. Decent drinking here; nicely packaged and a good warming effect even though the abv is relatively low against others in the style

Bottle at Brickskellar. Murky brown, beige head. Aroma of figs and prunes. Taste is sweet caramel and light spice. Good example of the style, but definitely for people with a sweet tooth.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 PotjeBier (425) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - MAY 24, 2010
On tap @ ’t Dicke Verschil (Kanne (B)) (who claim it’s the only place in Europe that has this on tap). Nice redbrown color, thick offwhite head. Aroma is malty, grainy, with sweet fruit (raisins) and a bit of spice (coriander). Flavor is sweetish, sweet fruit (not too sweet). Even though it was a hot day, this went down very well.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 koopa (335) - , New Jersey, USA - MAY 23, 2010
750ml bottle purchased 1 year ago from Buyrite Liquors in South Plainfield NJ. Allowed to age in a temperature controlled environment until today.
Appearance: Pours a lovely chestnut brown into a Chimay goblet with a 1 finger cappuccino crown that shows some retention and lacing.
Smell: Toasted malt, a hint of brown sugar, a soap quality, a mild hop note, and a slightly root beer like quality.
Taste: If you drink this cold it comes off as a really watered down and boring brown. When cold it gave me the impression that this one doesn’t age well and if you still have it, it’s probably past peak already. But as it warmed up I got more flavor out of it. Still not a fantastic brown by American standards, but a decent Belgian brown.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Slightly creamy due to the time allowed for the bottle conditioning to continue.
Drinkability: Simple flavors, not a heavy mouthfeel, and an abv below 7% so its pretty sessionable.

A decent Brown Ale/Dubbel, one of those beers that get better with each sip, and very well done, although I can’t believe this was MJ’s beer of the year 1995...too sweet for my taste

Pours hazy brown with small off-white head; aroma is exotix fruity, slightly grassy, spicy and brown sugary sweet; flavor is exotic fruity, spicy and quite bitter, but also sweetish - brown sugar, caramel, but nothing too much - and warming. On it’s color and the style definition you would probably expect a sweeter and fuller experiene, but the body was medium at best and this was actually quite dry and refreshing, which was nice for a change.
