750ml bottle from BevMo. Pours reddish with a tan head. Smells perfumy with a nice wild floral tinge. Tastes of mild sugar, some tangy hops and cherries as well as a slight peppery finish.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Rodders (137) - Norwich, Norfolk, ENGLAND - APR 7, 2009
(Bottle from Fat Cat, Norwich) Pours dark brown/red with some froth. Smells a bit soapy with some spices and perhaps cinnamon, but nothing really stands out. Coffeish flavour, with a dry bitter aftertaste. A little dark fruit but again, nothing stands out. Nice though.
As it warms some good cinnammon definately enters the picture, with some spices and apple - this is really quite good at this stage. Still very little sweetness though. I originally had it at celler temperature and this did not do the beer justice, once it warms this is a tasty little beast.
3 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hallinghansen (857) - Odense SV, DENMARK - APR 5, 2009
Bottle at Carlsens Kvarter. Brown body, with an off-white head. I could not small anything at all, so I have to re-rate it. Flavor is plums, malt yeast and spices.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Pinball (7772) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - MAR 19, 2009
75cl bottle 6.5% the label is red, not blue. says grottenbier, pierre celis signature selection. grottenbier bruin/brune.
celebrating my forex gains of eur2000+ last two days, because the us central bank inflated the usd.. one of those beers where you need equal parts of swearing persuation and heavy tools to get the cork out. once cork was dismantled beer was happy and foamed over a bit, but nothing serious.
dark orangy brown, large thick offwhite head, that looks a little like soap.
very yeasty aroma with faint notes of spices.
flavor is caramel, spices, sweetness, dryness, cardemom? perhaps. it’s an okay bruin, balanced and easy to drink, but doesn’t really stand out except for being not bad. will appeal to the general public i’m sure.
4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 nuplastikk (2445) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 17, 2009
750ml corked bottle poured into it’s corresponding glass. Official. Pours a thick choco-brown color with a thin lasting head. The aroma is malty and yeasty, with a nice hoppy bitterness. The taste is smooth and creamy, lots of deep malt flavors with a balanced yeast and hop balance. Very well done Belgian Dubbel, this is top notch. Creamy and easy on the palate, some delicate fruity esters in there too.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Muggus69 (854) - Newcastle, NSW, AUSTRALIA - MAR 9, 2009
Date: 8/1/09
Beer info: Bottled in brown 330ml bottle 6.5% abv BB 17 06 11
Sampling Notes:
Served chilled in chalice.
Bit of a gush. Murky brown body with small tight offwhite foam.
Toasty bread malt nose, reminisant of rye, bit of brown sugar and spice.
Carbonation is somewhat low, thick oily texture, drying sensation leaves mouth a bit chalky.
There isn’t a great deal to the body, some grain toasty malt, bit of mollasses, odd woody spice, hint of dried fruit. Finishes dry, reasonably bitter.
Not a particularly characterful Belgian dark ale, don’t really have much to say about it at all really...
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Maverick34 (1322) - New York, USA - MAR 7, 2009
Bottled as Grotten Brown . Pours dark w/medium head. Yeast, fruits etc, taste is spice and some bitterness, overall pretty well done. another quality offering from Watou.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 raymondwave (931) - FINLAND - MAR 2, 2009
Bottle 0,33 l. Brown, beigish head. Nose is fruity, some yeast, dust. Flavor is malty, spicy, intensely bitter in a strange way. I don’t know if it’s just the image of caves, but it does feel kind of sandy or rocky with all the dryness.
