redgold07 (308), Irving, Texas, USA Nov 26, 2007 Pours a very dark and opaque brown into the glass with a thick tan head. Sweet malty/caramel flavor. Delicious.
On tap. dkachur (2319), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Nov 15, 2007 Bottle. Poured dark bronze. Took a while to tell that given it’s nearly entirely head. Foamy, but quick dissipating. Good lacing. Yeasty aroma with sour citrusy notes. Taste is more of same. This tastes like it will get old quickly (like, by the end of the bottle), but it is interesting. Ughsmash (3983), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Nov 7, 2007 Bottled, at least a few years old. Poured clear, deep garnet with a delightful creamy cap of beige head that stayed ’til the end. The aroma picked up a nice, dry, spicy yeast strain with some white pepper, light fruits, and some piney notes.. soft, a touch sour, and very well-composed. The flavor didn’t dissapoint.. chocolate and aged caramel at the mildly sour core with darker fruit skins, pepper, and crusty bread riding the edges.. mild fruity bitterness. Just shy of medium-bodied with a nice sweet/sour contrast throughout.. dry and refreshing on the palate. Great beer! bp (452), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 30, 2007 Draft: Reddish brown, aroma of burnt caramel, I couldn’t pick up much flavor, kinda bland. wickedpete (625), Lexington Park, Maryland, USA Oct 29, 2007 Dark ruby brown with a fluffy white head. Yeasty vinous aroma. Sweet caramel flavor. Light and spritzy. heavy (815), Split, Croatia Oct 29, 2007 25/10 0.33 l bottle at Hopdevil. Poured dark reddish brown colored body with big brownish head. Aroma is a sourish with caramel and fruity, primarily orange, then also some dark tropical fruits. Flavor is better, quite full and fruity as well. Chocolate felt inside, caramel also. Aftertaste is short, sweetish, very pleasant with oily texture both in the glass and on palate. Very nice beer, thanks Petra for choosing this one as well. Beershine (2678), Hue, Vietnam Oct 25, 2007 Updated: Mar 5, 2008(tap) A totally unique beer that impressed me. Aromas and flavors of tropical fruits. Pithy and dense. Some sourness, must, and spice. I would like to have this again.
re-rate (bottle--red label but is the brown for sure). Impressed me again. A subtle, understated beer that can easily be overlooked and under-appreciated and apparently is. Complex flavors include smoked apple, applewood-smoked bacon, and a smidgen of licorice. Dry finish. Mouthfeel is chewy, smooth, light. Nose is apple & pear, guava & lemon, on one layer--and another layer of earth and wood. I could make this a daily beer, easily. smartlung (154), Valrico, Florida, USA Oct 15, 2007 pretty carbonated - very dark - loaded with spices and pretty woody. I like it caved! Very good beer - of course from the maker of St. Bernardus
