MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA Dec 18, 2004 Draft Rich O’s: Brown with a red touch. Large pillowy tan head. Cinnamon and ginger aroma initially. Yeasty, lambic flavor and lightly sour. Some grass notes and light cherry. Good. barenada (211), Georgetown, Indiana, USA Dec 18, 2004 (draft) A nice spicy aroma that led to a fairly tame-tasting beer. There was a slight mustiness to it that didn’t exactly thrill me. By the second half of the glass the head had dissipated so both the spice and the must had gone. What was left was good but not great. goldtwins (4078), Nesconset, New York, USA Dec 17, 2004 Tap: Dark Mahogany with a thin long lasting off white head. For such a nice head the beer was smooth and fairly low in carbonation. Aroma of grape candy, dark fruit, and malt. Flavor is malty, fruity, and short. Short bitter finish. iwantalambic (1385), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Dec 14, 2004 750 mL, corked & caged: fluffy, light tan foam, turning rocky with giant craters. Hazed garnet-plum. Dusty bananas, chalk, and limestone tingle my nose hairs as wisps of alcohol and slightly tart plums seep into my eyes. Spicy, astringent palate: anise mixed with creamy cloves and lightly cracked pepper. Light yeasty complexity keeps this one interesting, but a dull acidic quality is a bit annoying and detracts from the smooth flavour profile of figs, plums, sourdough, oak, and toffee. Dry and bitter through the finish. marcus (1821), Sacramento, California, USA Dec 8, 2004 This dark brown ale pours with an attractive tan head, eliciting a spicy aroma. There is a straightforward, but spritzy brown ale flavor that is less malty than most other browns. Overall, a very satisfying, but not exceptional brew. footy (334), scottsdale, Arizona, USA Nov 23, 2004 Updated: Nov 28, 2004Bottled 750 ml. Two from De Smedt (6.5% and cave aged longer) and Two from St. Bernardus(6.7% and not aged as long). Both Mahogony brown with large tan head. Both malty cherry smell. Both medium bodied. The De Smedt’s are a little smoother less astringent and with a little fuller mouthfeel. Making it slightly better but both are very good. A nice drinking beer and doesn’t involve to much thought. jonsiii (157), Fredericia, Denmark Nov 20, 2004 Fruit and smoke smell? Nice lasting head, dark brown color. Pleasant long finish. Nice beer after "Dansk Jul" and "Slots Classic". :) Brodie (540), Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA Nov 11, 2004 Great aroma - spicy, fruity, and earthy with hints of toffee. Amber brown color, thin bu persistent tan head. Flavor unfortunately is a little thin, still quite spicy, but the malt character is disappointing. Medium body with high carbonation. Overall, not a bad dubbel, lacks the rich maltiness of the best examples, but makes up for it with a complex nose and spicy palate.
