BBB63 (3810), La Porte, Indiana, USA Sep 8, 2006 Bottle, corked, Pierre Celis Selection, Grotten Brown, Cave Aged Ale, served in my NB worthy glassware: Poured a russet brown hue with a small frothy head and good lace. The nose displayed berry, current, starfruit, oak, cashew, earthy and musty yeast esters. The taste starts with a splash of twangy and tannic fruits on top of a solid base of roast malts. A heavy duty vein of acidic tartness runs throughout and cleans the palate. Oaky, nutty, and mineral softness adds to a neato balance. The feel is crisp and refreshing, I sort of dig this more than expected. An interesting brew that is neither Dubbel nor Sour Brown, yet added characteristics of both. I really found myself in trance with this beer the more I tasted it. The overall component is greater than the parts.
dj (383), Gloucestershire, England Oct 11, 2008 Bottle, 330ml. A cloudy brown colour with a small head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt and dark fruit. Taste has chocolate malt, blackberry and caramel. Quite tasty. TrefwoordPunk (371), Leiden, Netherlands Oct 10, 2008 75 cl. corked bottle shared with friends. Pours brown with a really big head and an aroma of ripe banana’s and a hint of alcohol. Taste is really standard, like every Belgian ale out there. Nothing specia; Borup (996), Albertslund, Denmark Oct 7, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown colour with a nice beige head. Aroma and flavour of dark fruit, brown sugar and spice. BelgianBeerGal (978), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Sep 30, 2008 75cl corked 2005 bottle. Pours a dark brown colour with light sediment and a short white head. Very spicey aroma with a little sugar too. Flavour was nice but finished a little sour and the mouthfeel was a little thinner than expected. Good but not great. FishManLA (182), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA Sep 29, 2008 Deep reddish brown with a medium sized long-lasting head. Nose of raisins and prunes. Taste of dark fruits, nuts, sugar, and bread, like fruitcake. Bitter/sweet fruit and nut finish. This for sale in USA bottle was labeled "Grotten Brown, Pierre Celis Signature Selection" and the ABV of this batch is stated to be 6.7% on the bottle. From Brouwerij St. Bernard (so I’m confident I identified it correctly). Label graphics are essentially identical to the picture here.
