"Gruut" is an ancient Flemish coin. In medieval Ghent, brewers used Gruuts to pay taxes on the richness of their brew. Gentse Stadsbrouwerij has revived this ancient tradition with Gruut Amber Ale. Enjoy it’s rich taste, deep copper color, and smooth-drink-ability.

33cl Bottle @ De Bierboom, Brugge on 4th July 2012. Clear body with an amber hue: thin head of off-white bubbles. Caramel and other malty aromas in the nose, some yeast hunts hidden at the back as well. The taste was also malty caramel and on the semi-sweet side with the yeast esters not showing in the flavours within the mouth. Medium bodied and rich enough to carry the sweetness without turning the beer into a sickly mess. My sweet tooth loved it (I even bought a bottle to bring home).

Pours a dark clear copper color. Toast and a sweet dried fruit aroma. Very pleasing dry "Belgian" yeast taste to it. Overall, it’s decent but what really blew me away was the fact that this isn’t brewed with hops. Cool...

Bottle from Corks of Cotham, Bristol. Red amber with a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, caramel and berry fruit aroma with a hint of aged wood. Flavour was similarly sweet, with a sharp finish. Fine.

UPDATED: SEP 11, 2014 Drinkable, but overall rather bland, overmalted, underhopped and spiced Belgian amber ale from the type I am trying to develop my palate away from, having grown up with these well-done, but ultimately watery and still cloying caramel concoctions. OK accompaniment to food (roasted chicked on Palm and honey sauce with Ceasar salad). 6/05/2012 / Rerate 08/2014: actually quite an impressive natural bitterness for an unhopped beer and closer to the style of Spéciale Belge than a few maltier modern versions. Easy drinking considering its 6,6%, hard to place herbaceous spices working in the back.
