"Gruut" is an ancient Flemish coin. In medieval Ghent, brewers used Gruuts to pay taxes on the richness of their brew. Gentse Stadsbrouwerij has revived this ancient tradition with Gruut Amber Ale. Enjoy it’s rich taste, deep copper color, and smooth-drink-ability.

Drank with Rik and Marijn at Cafe Hoegaarden 30/1/2014. Okay beer to start the evening. Light taste. It looks spicy, ’troebel’, in Dutch. Caramel taste. Good mix between bitter and sweet. Good beer, though lacks the depth and complexity of a great beer.

Bottle from Yamaichi. Fruity, spicy nose. Minerals, light citrus, grassy hop, dry caramel malt. Rather typical Belgian amber. Clear amber with a low, fine head. Sweet caramel malt, stone fruits, light orange, some minerals. Light and subtle, spices not overwhelming, nicely bitter finish. Decent stuff. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with all their beers so far.

33 cl. bottle @ Gruut bar. Lovely glass. Appearance is clear copper amber with a very creamy white head that never disappears. Smells of brown sugar, leaves, plenty of herbs & caramel apples. Taste is pretty simple, herbal, candied apples, Moroccan dried fruits, candied apples, plenty of brown sugar, herbal notes dominate all. Fluffy body. Pretty simple & basic, lacks a bit pizzazz but enjoyable all the same.

Bottle. Nose of caramel, prunes, and some herbs. Dark amber/brown color, little head. Moderate dark fruit, brown sugar, caramel, bread. Medium body. A bit amped up in flavors and alc. for an amber. Tastes more like a bock. Okay.

@Gent, amber met witte kraag
matig zoet, licht bitter, ietwat caramel, niet zo’n geslaagd biertje, de smaken vind ik wat minder, niet slecht maar ook geen topper
