"Gruut" is an ancient Flemish coin. In medieval Ghent, brewers used Gruuts to pay taxes on the richness of their brew. Gentse Stadsbrouwerij has revived this ancient tradition with Gruut Amber Ale. Enjoy it’s rich taste, deep copper color, and smooth-drink-ability.

02/09/2016 - 33cl bottle @ a restaurant in Ghent. Darlk copper with rocky light tanned head. Nose is dark malts, caramel, fruits, same for taste. Strange for an amber ale but it wasn’t bad.

Sampled from tap at the brewpub. Clear, dark brownish amber with a dark beige head. Sweetish-malty aroma of caramel, nuts and some brown sugar. Sweetish-malty, minimally roasty taste of caramel, nuts, a bit of chocolate and some brown sugar, followed by a short, slightly bitter and a bit roasty finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Okay!

330ml bottle served in a snifter glass. Pours a beautiful clear dark amber color forming a big and creamy light yellow color head with medium retention and some soapy and lingering lacings left in the glass. Nose is sweet and spicy. Strong notes of caramel malts, honey, brown sugar and apple. Hints of tangerine, cinnamon and dried plums. Taste follows the nose. Sweet, in overall. Strong notes of caramel malts, honey, brown sugar and apple. Again, hints of cinnamon, tangerine, candi sugar and dried plums. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Caramel, tangerine and dry fruits in the aftertaste. Not very persistent. Medium drinkability. Interesting.

Bière rare, mais pas vraiment agréable. Très végétale, pas équilibrée. Assez désagréable à boire.

330 ml bottle. Clear amber body with a medium sized tan head. Aroma reminds me a lot about this typical smell I get from malt extract brewing kit. Can’t really put my finger on it, it’s just something with malt, caramel and yeast that smells a bit unfinished somehow. Flavor is sweet malt, toast, red apples and low bitterness. Medium body and a bit fruity in aftertaste. Quite plain. I’m aware it’s brewed with gruut and that could be unusually and challenging, but I still think there should be a reason for doing such thing that has some more interesting flavor as aa result. Still want to try other beers from this brewery if available.

Een Gents biertje, vergelijkbaar met Brugse Zot van in Brugge. Wel zeer lekker.
