"Gruut" is an ancient Flemish coin. In medieval Ghent, brewers used Gruuts to pay taxes on the richness of their brew. Gentse Stadsbrouwerij has revived this tradition with Gruut Wit Beer. Enjoy it’s natural cloudiness, golden color, and refreshing finish.

Bottle. Pours a very pale yellow with a high, white, shaving-cream head and considerable haze and lace. Nose is a clove-studded orange -- no, really, it’s one of those pomander things. Really nice. Clean and spicy on the tongue, with more orange-clove followed up by a honey or dark agave sweetness. Really enjoyable, and I’m not the biggest fan of the style.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein trübes goldgelbes Bier mit ordentlichem Schaum. Geruch leicht hefig, leicht fruchtig, Gewürze. Geschmack hefig würzig, leicht fruchtig.

Jaune trouble, effervescence forte, col blanc moyen persistant. Céréales bien présentes mais le citronné et la coriandre propres au genre semblent en telle petite quantité qu’elles semblent faire défaut, quasi pas d’amertume mais un certain corps.

Light floral, orange and spice. Very pale cloudy yellow, as ’white’ a beer as there is. Light sweetness, but most noticeable is the zesty citrus aftertaste. Very soft body, exceedingly drinkable. A very light handed approach to the wit style.

Pours white, almost colourless pale and foamless liquid. Aroma has some slight yeast character, a bit of orange peels. Taste has more orange peels with some ginger and coriander playing around - just as it should be in a decent Belgian wit. Some carbonation cleaning your palate. Aftertaste has some slight grapefruit seed bitterness, staying a bit longer. Overall, good summer beer, should also be good with some fish dishes.

33 cl bottle thanks to Johan and Åsa (not on ratebeer). Sampled on December 26, 2013.
BB 09/09/15.
Cloudy yellow color, fizzy white head. Herbal, faint spicy scent, hints of yeast and phenoles. Mineral, malty, a bit sweet, herbal taste. Herbal aftertaste. Fizzy mouthfeel, low bitterness.
Rather mild, though sort of non distinct as well.

Bottle on the morning of the away match with Taborsko. Pours a pale lemony yeallow with a foamy white head. The colours look washed out. Flavour is fairly textbook Wit. Dusty citrus hops and sourish wheat accompaniment. Pretty nice. It’s nice to rotate the styles and Wit is an underpopulated beer style in my opinion.

Bottle. Mild citrus fruit juice and yeast nose. Pale apple juice color, thick pocked head. Thinly sweet initial / some coriander and a little off-flavor grass in mid / finish is minimal, with small touch of carb and grass. Thin, watery body. Not so impressive.
