COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Gruut" is an ancient Flemish coin. In medieval Ghent, brewers used Gruuts to pay taxes on the richness of their brew. Gentse Stadsbrouwerij has revived this tradition with Gruut Wit Beer. Enjoy it’s natural cloudiness, golden color, and refreshing finish.

Has a cloudy straw color and a fair head. Not much aroma, but a nice smooth citrus flavor with a mildly bitter finish.

Bottle. Pale yellow, cloudy. Wheaty nose, with perfumy spicyness. A bit like some aromatized soap bars. Body is soft. Wheat, spices. Strange drink. Very much like some soap bars aromatically. Some citrus too. Quite easy to drink, and the spicyness isn’t really that offending, you get used to it.

bartlebier (523) - Baden-Württemberg, GERMANY - APR 30, 2013
Rated from 33cl bottle BB12/07/2014, had on tap. - The RB commercial description omits that this is the ?only Belgian brewery making beers without hops according to the pre-germanic Medieval recipes. - Pours a less than inviting milk-wey straw yellow-green, small pillowy head. Nose is unusual and slightly stale, heavy on indefinable spices and a hint of clove. taste makes up for this: coriander, fresh wheat, used lemon tea bag light, slick-bready palate. Unusual, bordering on unbalanced but not too shabby for a wit without any hops.

Tap sample at the brewpub. Hazy pale yellow colour, dense white head. Aroma of sulphur, some sweet spices, coreander, creamy. Flavour is light acidic, lemon, sweet spices, light floral, wheat, light bitter finish. Light-bodied. Bad smell, nice taste.

Bottle from Yamaichi. Brilliant pastel golden, low, fine head. Malty, grainy nose, lemon and citrus, herbs. Decent. Nice malt flavor, wheat, cereals, honey. Citrus and spices. Relatively light, refreshing stuff. Not at all gimmicky or overdone. I like what they are doing with the gruut.

(bottle, 01.07.13) Pours in hazy light yellow color with tiny head. Aroma is citrusy, little bit sour. Taste is full of wheat, less of citrus than in the aroma. Somehow spicy. No hops at all. Body is full, medium carbonation. Oily texture.

Very soft tasting beer. Not a lot of the typical citric taste of white beers. Light bitterness.

Bottle at Pressklubben, Sthlm 120905. Yellow, a bit hazy beer with a small offwhite head. Citrus, banana and a bit sourish aroma. Sweet, a bit citrus and some banana notes in the flavour. A bit thin taste...
