As far as belgian ales go, this is not one. Yes, it’s got a belgian sweetness and spiciness. But the lack of hops makes it rather unbalanced.

Bottle 33 cl. Hazy to cloudy pale amber color, one finger frothy white head, recedes slowly, fair lacing; aroma fruity sweet malts, bread, yeasty, bit of banana, hint of vanilla; taste moderate sweet, very light sour undertones, yeasty; light to medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation; finish mild sweetbitter, soft spicy notes (coriander, ginger). Not really special but quite agreeable.

Bottle at home. Hazy golden yellow with some lacing of a white head. Little aroma, hints of yeast, bread and soft fruit. Thin palate of sweet summer fruit lacking in any hop balance. Herbs are used in the recipe but are unspecified. Pleasant summer drink but a bit on the sweet side.

Alengrin (1716) - BELGIUM - AUG 20, 2014
Gruut’s third, with creamy, moussy, stable head and misty ochre blonde colour. Mild spicy aroma, yeasty, peach, hazelnuts, apple peel, white bread, bog myrtle like in Gageleer, liquorice, cookies, cinnamon, ginger, bitter honey. Restrained fruity sweetness, some banana and peach, flowery and honeyish touch, fresh, soft spicy notes, soft bitter finish with a dry yeastiness. Hard to believe it isn’t hopped as they claim, but a good session ale in any case.
