ALLOVATE (2098) - Butler, - JUL 1, 2011
Supple mousy, huffy, hessian sack and old leather couch smell to it with a little doughy, dry green apple and pear drops coming through. Draws a hazy caramel gold in colour with minute particulate carbonation sparse in its divide. Dry, mousy and hairy palate. Quite woody and just a bit cheesy to make it interesting. There is a huff of smoke that lingers, the swallow drains the palate of saliva, oh so dry. The body is light but it yields good presence, the apple flavours are strangely of those you’d pass up if it was fruit yet seem to work so well on this one post fermentation. Tightly sour but in check, and gently bitter, rough but also in tune. This is a nice session cider. Seems to hide itself so you could slam them back all night. The body is light enough, the carbonation is gentle, barely a prickle. A nice, definitively dry cider with character! (33cL, no date stamp [though purchased June 2010], Dan Murphy’s Morley)

Bottle in The French House, Soho. Colour is light rusty amber, with some cider article cloudiness, very much apple juice looking. Nose is apple, famryard, manure, mustyy, caramel. Lots of good flavours. Taste is milldly sweet, apple, little farmyard.

Syru[y, golden, full of apple flavour. Tastes like what I imagine old school cider is like.

Bottle at home. Pours clear, bubbly gold with a soft, white head. Rich, semi-ripe apple nose with some caramel and mild funk. Light to medium sweet, dry with fresh apples, light sweat, dank must. Light to medium in body and well carbonated. Crisp, faintly dry finish, not too sweet with more fresh, sweaty apples. Very good cider.

330ml bottle. Pours a dark gold, with, naturally, no head. The aroma is a bit musky, with notes of Edam and dried apples. To begin, there is some very tart apple skin, like biting into a Granny Smith apple. This moves into an appealing sour apple flavour, and a finish with hints of Edam again. Throughout, it is as dry as the Atacama on a hot day in a drought. As I first tasted this, I wasn’t too big on it, but the more I had, the more I liked. This is one of my favourite ciders to date, I think.

Bottle from Carringtons, Chorlton, Drunk at home watching the Masters. Dark orangey gold colour, slight haze. Woody, sweetish apple nose. Nice softish sweet flavour with great quality apple notes ; all pretty well balanced with a moderate dryness. Am a fan of cider like this.

Bottle that I had with my meal at Cafe Rouge, Cheltenham, Glos’ 05-09-09 Pours a murky cloudy golden colour there is medium carbonation, some white bubbles on the top. There is a touch of floralness and some twigs on the nose. Nicely tangy in the mouth but also, softened apples, nice fruity bite, tasty stuff. A6 A3 F6 P4 Ov13 3.2
