Thick creamy head, watery palate, light roast, nutty acidity, thin body. Not much of anything anymore. The can has a bit more acidity than the bottle but both are rather unimpressive. Rerate from a 3.5 overall.

I prefer it to the Guinness Original in the bottles. The taste is almost negligible, but it seems fresher in a way. Every can opened is like a reunion with an old friend. Pours with a beautiful head and dark appearance. The nitrogen widget put in the cans makes the complex aroma more apparent. The flavor carries notes of coffee and chocolate and always goes down smooth and nice. The bitter aftertaste, although enjoyable, can sometimes be so persistent that it is bothersome (particularly after a night of drinking several of these). An excellent beer that I will always favor.

The ONLY stout. Even better when tasted in Ireland. I gotta get back there!

Watching a proper pour develop is one of the great luxuries in life. Do yourself a favor and make a pilgrimage to Dublin, Ireland at some point in your life to get a fresh one from the brewery. One of my favorite beers.

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2003 A worthy drink to be Ireland most famous export. What it lacks in flavor it makes up for with an unmistakably brilliant texture of a silky smooth body with a short but fine, creamy, persistant head that will last the entire glass! Have fun dissassembling your can to recover the curious nitro widget and be mesmerized by the fluid dynamics of the nitrogen bubbles ascending through the beer during the pour.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2003 Not as good as St. Ambroise or Samuel Smith but still a measuring stick. The pour, the colour. And widely available. Agree that bar draft is much nicer than the can. The can does seem watery compared to real draft.

I love Guinness. Especially draft. But, unfortunetly this bar did not know how to serve it. They gave it to me in a frosted glass which allowed for no aroma and low flavor. I really noticed the malts more than in the bottle and creaminess.

most places serve it to cold- but a pint of the black is hard to beat for washing down a good meal, a few socialbles or getting down right hammered while out on the town.
