For Continental Europe, to stay in conformance with the German Purity Law, Guinness produces an all-malt version, replacing the flaked barley.

I believe this is the one I had in France and Spain. Served from this little plastic light up draft. Looks great, tastes a little more thin than the US version. Doesn’t have that fullness I was expecting, probably from the lack of the flaked barley. Dry finish.

Tasted 2008-04-09. Bottle. Pours dark brown / black with light brown / grey / beige head. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee - weak aroma. Ditto flavours. Very wattery, but no off flavours. Somewhat uninteresting, but OK I guess.

Black with a greyish brown head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malts and liqorice. The flavours are dry, acid and roasted.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2011 Bottle. Chocolate and smokey charcoal aroma. Dark brown color with gigantic fluffy tan head. Smokey/ashy chocolate malt flavor. Overall better than the US version but occasionally gave me the impression that someone had put cigarette ashes in it.

UPDATED: MAR 11, 2008 0,33 l bottle. Black, with a lovely creamy brown head. Classic stout - very dry, with the usual roasted aromas and coffee/ dark chocolate flavors. Pure enjoyment, but the Draught version is kinda more interesting.

33 cL bottle with bbd in 2003 (2001 vintage) and 2000 (1998 vintage) tasted in 2007. Pours deep brown to black with a light brown head. Slight alcohol aroma in a deep roasted malt nose. flavour is oldish, same for both. Rerate needed of a fresh - doesn’t gain from ageing.

Vintage 1998 Guinness Continental extra stout Bottle. Large brown head that mostly lasted. Excellent lacework. Pitch black color. Aroma of light coffee, chocolate, roasted malt and earthy like feel. Hint of liquorish as well. Unfortunately too old. Medium bodied with a soft carbonation and light dry texture. Light bitter and sweet flavor. Light dry and bitter finish.

Big fluffy light chocolate head quickly reduced to a thin layer of foam. Near black colored body with a dark mahogny glow. Smells dry malty with a a lot of roast and rough hops. Notes of dark dried fruits, coffee and ash. Fairly dry malt taste, with some noteable earthy hops and dark fruits. Salty and light sour tones. Well-bodied for a 5% abv. Roasty and bitter finish. Mmm.
