Labattís brew a pale ale base to which is added the unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract. Guinness Extra Stout is brewed in Canada by Labatt under license from Arthur Guinness Son & Company. Editorís Note: It looks like Moosehead is also brewing Guinness. Bottles in the US are from there of late, but Canadian bottles are still showing Labatt. 04/23/06

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Aroma has a muted roast character with some light coffee and faint chocolate notes. Medium light dark fruit esters with faint banana and tropical fruit. Pours a clear, dark brown with some lighter brown highlights and a medium thick, moderately sized tan head that recedes to the edges where it lingers. Flavor has a faint sweetness with moderate roast and coffee notes and light chocolate character. Mid to late palate you pick up some fruit notes of berry, cherry and prune with faint hints of banana and tropical fruit. Finish has a lingering roast note. Medium light bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low, but present astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall a pretty unimpressive stout with a surprisingly large ester quality. Nice roast notes along with light chocolate, but not as Bright as they could be. Good mouthfeel with slight stickiness.

Pretty much a reliable standby when in the mood for a stout and your options are limited.

Bottle. Bought six pack for $5.99 for St. Patrickís Day. Ten years ago when I first had this beer I thought it was great. Now, I feel that it is far below par as far as stouts are concerned. Pour was dark brown and head was tan. Aroma was vegetable water and butter. Taste was vegetable water, metal, roasted malts, and some slight fruitiness. The finish coats the mouth with a light chocolate flavor. Body is very light and the level of carbonation is high.

Brown hue, manila head. Beads of lace here and there.

Smells oxidized and generically malty. Tastes of slightly aged hops, mild astringency, and zero roasted malt character delivered by a thin body. Wtf?

Hard to be disappointed when coming in with low expectations, but here we are. This gives "dark beer" everywhere a bad name. Please stop producing it.

Bottle. Black with tan head. Huge chocolate malt. I prefer the Draught version just for the nitro.

I think I have had Guinness from 2 or 3 different regions and can say that not having them together I cant or had noted a different taste. Pour is black and has a nice tan head. Aroma is full of coffee, chocolate and malts. At finsh taste it smooth and malty but then bitter hops hits you and that my friends is what makes it great.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a moderate tan head. Aroma is dark malts and dark fruits, reminiscent of a doppelbock. Itís both sweet and roasty. These is a kind of a fruity, malty sweetness with a touch of roastiness. I like this better than Guinness Draught, but Iíll stick with higher quality stouts.

Not bad. Heavier than I usually drink but not too heavy. Goes great with a hand full of almonds. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

No retention and no lacing. Smells of black licorice, chocolate and very sweet malt. Tastes of black licorice, molasses and chocolate. Long molasses finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
