COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Labattís brew a pale ale base to which is added the unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract. Guinness Extra Stout is brewed in Canada by Labatt under license from Arthur Guinness Son & Company. Editorís Note: It looks like Moosehead is also brewing Guinness. Bottles in the US are from there of late, but Canadian bottles are still showing Labatt. 04/23/06

I think I have had Guinness from 2 or 3 different regions and can say that not having them together I cant or had noted a different taste. Pour is black and has a nice tan head. Aroma is full of coffee, chocolate and malts. At finsh taste it smooth and malty but then bitter hops hits you and that my friends is what makes it great.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a moderate tan head. Aroma is dark malts and dark fruits, reminiscent of a doppelbock. Itís both sweet and roasty. These is a kind of a fruity, malty sweetness with a touch of roastiness. I like this better than Guinness Draught, but Iíll stick with higher quality stouts.

Bottle. Light molasses, chocolate, and barley malt aroma. Black brown with a large tan head. Burnt barley malt, dark fruit, and a long roasty bitter finish. Light body, lively carbonation.

Bottle: Deep brown color, ruby highlights with a khaki head that isnít nearly as impressive as Guinness on nitro. Very faint aroma; roasted barley & malts, grains, tin, a little bit of dark fruitiness, mostly red grape. Taste is a little more heavy... Roasted, charred malt & barley, toasted grains, positive alcohol presence with more red grape, almost in a wine-like manner. Finish with a hint of bitter coffee & mild ash. Booziness quite apparent for only 6% ABV. Not bad, but honestly Iíd take the US Draught over this... Easier to drink & I like the dryness of it. I donít love the vinous dark fruit I pull from this one.

This beer pours out thin and black but if held to the light you can see a dark brown hue. A fat loose head of tan foam that fell slowly to a film, then a small ring and left lace that was not permanent. Nose is malty and grassy. Sweet malt , light toast, light caramel and grassy hops. Then some dark fruits evolve. Prune and a bit of something grapey and quite sweet. Taste follows the nose all the way except the first thing to greet your palate is metallic. The malt is a bit awkward and husky but you begining to enjoy it as robust as you drink. The dark fruits are light and at first the prune is sour but that gives way to this grapey sweetness. Mouthfeel is light and has a nice dryness to the mid palate. Finishes a touch bitter and with that grass over top of a light caramel.

For a stout this was crisp and mild. With a bit of hop presence this is an easy drinking stout that gives some light buttered toast and a touch of caramel to a bit of dark fruits and finishes a bit tame but altogether pleasant.

This is an intense stout, with strong hops and a medium body. The malt is understated while the hops are overstated. A nice head and a very dark color, this is better than the Guinness draught, but still not great.
