The basis is an unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract shipped from Dublin, which is added to local ingredients and brewed locally. The abv may vary.

There is also another Guinness FES at 6.5% alcohol, brewed in Kenya, by Kenyan Breweries Ltd and one brewed in Tanzania by Serengeti Breweries Ltd.

Editor’s Note: Not sure at what point this went from 7.5% (the standard FES) to 6.5%. This entry is for Jamaican, Tanzanian and the Kenyan FES’ only - we don’t know of any others at 6.5% but if you see one let us know.

Bottle in Jamaica. Nice strong beer with lots of coffee aroma. There was a roasted coffee taste with chocolate notes. balanced nice by hops. Contrasting sweet and bitter flavors added a complex taste. very similar to the US extra, but different.

Bottled 275 ml at John Crow’s Tavern, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on January 24, 2015.
Jamaica version, stated on label to be brewed at "Desnoes and Geddes". 6.5% ABV.
Clear very dark brown to black color, big lasting brown head. Sweet malty, rich scent. Rich, malty, roasted, alcohol taste. Alcohol aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, medium high bitterness.
Though the ABV is "only" 6.5%, the alcohol is way too evident in the taste and aftertaste, scent is much better to my personal liking.

Bottle in NBO. Pretty close to black color, brown head. Aroma of chocolate, burnt licorice. Taste has cocoa, toffee, burnt coffee. Nice change of pace.

Pours a black body with chestnut colored highlights. Head is 1/2 inch and coffee colored. Head retention was good and lacing was above average. Smells are very underwhelming at first but the dominant ones are of figs, dates, and oddly burnt plastic. As beer warms more fruit is detected as well as some alcohol. Taste is pretty fruity for a stout, has lots of characteristics of a foreign stout. Lots of dried figs/dates/prunes. Charred caramel and chocolate malts are also present. For 6.5 abv, the alcohol is definitely present Mouthfeel is medium bodied, well carbonated. Head had some presence in the texture. Overall this beer was alright, about average for the style. No glaring flaws to the beer just nothing out of the ordinary. Glad I tried it though.

Bottle, Kenya version. Pours near black. Sweet and ashy, with medium roasted malts, light earthy notes, and a sweet malty finish. Not awful.

Bottle courtesy of (...Andy?) at RBSDADG 2014. Pours a deep blackish brown body with thin off white lacing. Aroma is sweet roast, light earthy character and faint chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium (perhaps not as creamy and full than the typical Guinness on draft, but not entirely sure due to the different sampling scenarios). Overall, this seems to be on par with the normal guinness - though I would’ve preferred to try both back-to-back to get a clearer distinction between the two.

There seems to be various versions of this beer, but I had the one brewed in Tanzania by Serengeti Breweries Ltd.

275ml bottle, by way of Montego, Jamaica. Deeply roasted, black malt in the aroma, along with lighter notes of licorice, prune, dark chocolate, toasted bread and earthiness, has certain burnt and dark fruit characters lurking in the background. Quite intriguing. Mostly black in color, only showing some dark brown around the edges, and with a very fine, lasting, khaki head. Flavor profile is roasty, charred and bittersweet, with suggestions of anise, cacao, espresso, woody smoke and dark, dried fruit in the background, closing on a drying, lightly bitter note. Features that particularly unmistakable Guinness malt twang. Active on the palate and supremely easy to drink for the style, mostly because its so tasty, body is medium. Thanks to my wife for risking life and limb to fetch this from outside the port town she visited recently. Only $1200 + tax for the 2 sixers! (That’s in Jamaican dollars.)

Had this at the RB Pgh Halloween Spook-tacular Tasting/Drunkfest fall 2013, nice time at Hornydevil’s place, thanks James & Michelle! Nice clean malty aroma. Really dark. Some co2 in there. A little strong but never over the top. Has some of that metal flavor inthere. Good over all stout. No widget in this can.
