3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DYCSoccer17 (3012) - Woodland, California, USA - SEP 3, 2012Purchased at Progressive Foods in Montego Bay. The aroma on this is really interesting. It’s super spicy and peppery, with some of the underlying roasted and toasted malt character. Some metallic character is also there, with some anise making a strong showing, too. It’s Guinness, but totally different. Opaque dark mahogany body with a medium, creamy tan head that is strong. Attractive. Starts with lots of anise an licorice character. Becomes leathery and somewhat roasted in the middle. Strong anise character also comes through later with a bit of a saltiness on the palate. Spiciness is present late. Super gnarly...not a huge fan of all the anise, though.

I drink this frequently as I travel to KE and TZ several times a year for work. The additives give a lot of off flavours in this that you do not have in regular draught Guinness. I have tried it in Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Malawi in addition to TZ and KE and it is the same brew in every place at 6.5%. Sometimes brewed by Bell’s brewery in Uganda, sometimes by KE breweries, and sometimes by Serengetti. I like the west african version better. Still its the best beer going in the horn of Africa.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 ComradeK (732) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - SEP 25, 2012
500ml bottle. Pours a deep, opaque black, with a large beige head, which lasts reasonably well and leaves good lacing. The aroma is fairly muted, with moderate espresso notes and some faint lemon and herbal hops notes. Prickling citric hops up front give way to some espresso and dark chocolate notes. There is some pleasant bitter cocoa in a drying finish. A fairly simplistic stout, but (since mine was brewed under licence in Dar es Salaam) I would have no hesitation in pronouncing it to be the best beer made in Tanzania, although this is emphatically not a huge compliment.

300ml bottle in South Sudan. From Kenya. Sweet, ruddy black malts with a distinct sour tinge. Strong bodied stout, with some hop bitterness. Really quite nice, and unexpectedly good break in this tiny town I’m in.

11.2oz bottle drank from the bottle. Pretty much regular Foreign Extra with something slightly sour and a little more hops. I would drink it again though given the chance. Much better than the free Red Stripe at the resort.

Bottle: Poured a black color stout with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of black chocolate with some lactose notes are quite interesting and different then the aroma of the regular version. Taste is also dominated by loads of black chocolate notes with some sweet undertones with lactose notes. Body is thinner then I would have expected with some good carbonation. Enjoyable in the sense that there is not much else to drink that is somewhat interesting in Kenya.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ughsmash (6669) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 1, 2012
Bottled, Jamaican. Poured medium-deep brown with a nice, sticky beige head. The aroma picked up sweet molasses and licorice notes with some vanilla bean and lightly-smoked malts too.. sweet and welcoming. The flavor found a mess of burnt dark sweetness at the core.. sharp oxidation cut through and rode out the finish along with nondescript bitterness.. ugly in the end. Medium-bodied with poor sweet/sharp interplay on the palate.. seemed past its prime.
