Pours dark brown, nearly black with a small creamy beige head and lacings. Nose is roast, coffee, fruit and chocolate. Oily and vinous. Lots of smoothness and balance in both nose and taste. Very fine. ChristianScheffel (4507), Odense, Denmark
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 25, 2009 Black with a lasting tan head. Aroma of plums and sweet cherries, with chocolate, and a vineous port and sherry touch. Dryish and vineous flavour, with cherry notes, a tart feel and pleasant roasted coffee notes in the background. Good bitter finish. BeerBiker (1392), Kathmandu, Nepal

Of course the carbonation was disappeared, but a great oily look with no head and a woody almost porty flavor gave me the impression of an unusual african beer. Creamy, burned malts, some sourness, but also meditative. DruncanVeasey (2732), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England

Only the eagle-eyed, borderline autistic ticker would have spotted that this wasn’t the standard Dublin FES, but something altogether more exotic and poisonous. Offensive sweet cheesy sock aroma that’s almost making me gag. Not quite pitch with a creamy tan head. Astringent dissolved penny bitterness, pencilly (possibly hop-derived) conifer, thin toasted grain, watery cocoa, charred wood. Like sucking cheese spread through a tramp’s sock. So bad, so wrong I can’t stand to part with it and have re-capped it and put it back in the fridge. No, no, no. Everyone else loves this and I can’t believe I’ve missed out. This isn’t Guinness, doesn’t make me RB’s top rater of the (Dublin-based) blackstuff, and is probably the biggest disappointment of my beer-drinking life.

Smoother than the Irish GFES but at the expense of body. Lacks the bitterness of Irish GFES but feels stronger. Sweeter fruitiness to taste, no roast note. Less head. More like a schwarzbier than a stout. rosenbergh (891), Helsinki, Finland

Pitch black colour with tiny tan head.
Aroma is dried fruits, raisins and some roasted malts. Flavour is quite interesting. Roasted malts, dried fruits and some bitterness. Can’t find the sorghum, but I guess it’s there somewhere. Some coffee too. ogivlado (3070), Zagreb, Croatia

Black coloured, oily texture, medium sized brown head, light roasted and licorice nose. Roasted malt, dark fruits, plums and raisins with notes of licorice. Bitter roasty finish. Nice stout with sorghum. Doggythedog (1570), Split, Croatia
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 27, 2009 Bottle courtesy of and shared with ogivlado who found it in Wien (thanks!) Contains sorghum, wheat and barley malt. Interesting. Poured a black body lightly tinged with red with a small light brown head. Somewhat viscuous. The nose isn’t all that welcoming, bread, raisins and slightly sharp alcohol, light roastiness. The taste, however, while being strange, is. Fine roastiness, raisins, light caramel, plums, ending on a bitter note. Exotic and tasty. Smooth and yet heavy. Way more complex than the Irish versions. Quite nice.
