COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Foreign Extra Stout is a beer like no other. The most full-flavoured of all. Singular and striking. Uniquely satisfying. Brewed with extra hops and roasted barley for a natural bite. Bitter and sweet. Refreshingly crisp. Always rewarding. Pure beauty. Pure GUINNESS.

Editor’s Note: This is the standard FES. Sometimes it is imported from Ireland but more often it is brewed locally. This version is most common in the Caribbean and Africa. All versions from those places, save for Jamaica, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana should be rated here.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks beerandbeyond. Black, opaque, beige head. Wine, a little roast, a little fruit, a little sugar and coffee aroma. Roasty, coffee, bitter taste. Full body, fizzy, roasty dry finish, less creamy than the usual Guinness.

A - Black as night, 2 finger of dark mocha head that turns to a lighter color as it starts to slowly sink. S - Roasted cocoa, molasses, a smoked turkey cold cut kind of aroma(good), earthy coffee grinds, brown bread, caramelized brown sugar. T - Charred molasses, toasted brown sugar, roasted malt comes in strong toward the middle, sugary coffee coats the entire mouth, unknown peppery spice, has a sour fruit characteristic toward the finish. Finishes very dry for all the malty sweetness. M - Full bodied, luscious feel, moderate creamy carbonation, alcohol is present but fits and plays well with all of it’s counterparts. This is the Guinness that you dream of. A full and robust stout. Complex and extremely tasty. Serving type: bottle 03-17-2011

Aroma of burnt, charcoaly malts and a little aniseed. Texture is a bit watery and the flavour does not come through so well. Overall the mouthfeel is quite rough and unrefined. The bitterness is prominent and the alcohol is also present. There’s a bittersweet, treacley background in there somewhere.

[Bottle from Riviera Restaurant, Selsey] Dark brown with a light brown head and a light fizz. Fruity up front, then coffee, roasted malt and smoke develop, A little dryness too. The finish Is on the bitter, burnt side, but overall it’s a very decent stout, worlds away from the standard Guinness!

Bottle:   Deep brown, nearly black, moderate frothy beige head, fairly nice lacing.   Apple skin nose, roasted malts, slight ash and campfire.   Ash and campfire are more noticeable on the tongue.   Smooth, but not coating, roasted malt flavor.   Low hop, moderate malt base.   Fairly enjoyable.   Apple or Pear fruit skin flavor is fairly assertive, after the roastiness.   Semi-sweet lactose finish.   It reminds me of a milk stout for some reason.   Better than I anticipated.
