Commercial Description:
Higher in alcohol content than other Guinness products, this stout has a strong, oaky, complex flavor.

Editor’s Note: This is the standard FES. Sometimes it is imported from Ireland but more often it is brewed locally. This version is most common in the Caribbean and Africa. All versions from those places, save for Jamaica, Nigeria and Ghana should be rated here.

Bottle sampled in June 2006: Pours a mostly opaque with dark brown edges and a thin, lightly-lacing tan head. Aroma of sweet milk chocolatey malt and a hint of smoke. Body starts with a nice sticky caramel and chocolate maltiness finishing drier and more roasty. Well-balanced and enjoyable with a fairly full palate.

It may not be as pretty as Guinness Draught but in all other ways it’s a far better beer. More hoppy, with a very rich mixture of roasted ground coffee, and decedent chocolate which lingers through to the finish. Hints of fruitiness which gives it a little interesting complexity. A very enjoyable beer.

Bottle. Head was Large, creamy, light brown and mostly lasted. Good lacing left in glass. Color was of cause pitch black. Aroma was quit pleasing with the bearing notes being heavy malt. Butter, dry fruit, caramel, chocolate, coffee, burnt, smoke, licorice. Quit nice mouthful, still possesses some smoothness. Full bodied with a creamy texture and a flat carbonation. Flavor was moderated sweet with light bitterness to balance the beer. Sweet and average duration finish.

beer pours a thick, deep brown-tinted black, with a dense tan head that retains quiite well and leaves tons of lace. rich boozy nose with elements of chocolate and buttered figs (yes, perhaps a bit of diacetyl, but low-level, and well-integrated). great aroma - fun to just sniff. flavor starts with a deep, bitter-chocolate rush, that is quickly dried out by an obviously healthy punch of bittering hops. a very well balanced beer for its size - and a hell of an offering from a brewery that I honestly don’t think so much of. a bit hot in the finish.

Bottle, from Sainsburys Jan 2007. Jet black, excellent rocky beige head with good condition. Creamy coffee , butter and some slight bloody iron notes in the nose, roast coffee, chocolate and toast in the mouth and a suggestion of tartness toward the end. Dry roasty and powdery in the finish with some lingering sweet creamy coffee notes.

Thanks to Marianne and Kenni from www.g2b.dk for this one. It’s pitch black with a nice brown and creamy head. The aroma has notes of toasted bred, roasted malt and prunes. The flavour is delightful and the mouthfeel is oily. It has notes of bitter chocolate and licorice mixed with prunes, a bit of smoke, sweetness and oak bitterness. It’s a complex and utterly delightful stout!!
