DruncanVeasey (2695), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Nov 21, 2006 Updated: Mar 10, 2008Inky black pour, caramel head. Sweetish, slightly fudgy snout. Opens with a toffeeish creaminess, finishes with a blast of intense espresso roast. A hint of charred dry fruit. But mostly creamy and toffeeish. A particularly finely balanced specimen.
(Re-rate, 09/03/08) Erm, Tossco version. Irish I guess. SERIOUS hops, roast and bitter, bitter choc. Intense. powerfully dry and delicious beer. Strong charred oak and dark molasses/raisin aroma. Pitch black with moderate head - pours like motor oil. Smokey malt and grass flavors that fades into a nice roasted flavor. Fairly strong hops finish that stays with you long after swallowing. High acidity. Livelier than the Nigerian version. The best Guinness product I’ve had. Englander1986 (51), Middlesbrough, England Nov 8, 2006 I bought this drink a few months ago, and I was blown away at the difference of both taste and aroma compared to both original bitter and stout. It has a liquorice like taste to it compared to the traditional burnt taste of the others, and when taking your first mouth-full, tastes as if it has been spiked with a spirit lol. Loved it the first time I bought it, love it still, I buy this as often as I can at my local Tesco. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Nov 4, 2006 2002 bottle found in some random local bottle shop, apparently "on display," but the kid sold it to me for $2, not knowing it was not only rare but 4 years old. Whoops. This stuff has matured into what is one of the more interesting stouts I’ve ever had. Though it could be due to a brett infection, what I am drinking is a very dry, roasty, smooth stout, but one that is laced with slight sourness and a whole lot of funkiness. In the aroma especially, there is a lot of barnyard, cranberry, fresh green tobacco, cheese. Flavor is subtle and refined, with the funkiness playing 2nd fiddle to a cool, dry stout. Very drinkable, with zero alcohol presence. Top notch stuff! Perhaps I will buy a few bottles of Lion Stout to lay down for a few years, as they seem to have a good bit in common, although I’m not sure the lion is bottle conditioned, whereas this one is. Aroma is semi coffee, semi chocholate, and somewhat oaky. Flavor is reminisant of when I was an inexperienced beer drinker and really enjoyed guinness draught. it have roasty notes, coffee, and chocolate notes, but it was still nothing fantastic. Just something that is better than average. medium heavy palate. decent beer
