Commercial Description:
Higher in alcohol content than other Guinness products, this stout has a strong, oaky, complex flavor.

Editor’s Note: This is the standard FES. Sometimes it is imported from Ireland but more often it is brewed locally. This version is most common in the Caribbean and Africa. All versions from those places, save for Jamaica, Nigeria and Ghana should be rated here.

Sept, 2002: I found this extremely smooth and creamy - much softer than the standard Guinness. The strength is well concealed. [3.0]

The Great Guinness Taste Test with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/guinness-foreign Nigerian FES and <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/guinness-special FES.
Darker colour with thick lasting brown head. Light charred aromas some smokiness and a not too great malt component. Almost yeasty aroma rounds off the end. Up front roasty flavour attack. Tart finish with lighter carbonation. Poor malt flavours carry through to the end. Charred smoke seems almost acrid. By far the worst of the three, although not too bad.

Black with big brown head. Aroma is coffee and roasted malts. Taste is roasted malts, liquorice, brown sugar, coffee and chocolate with a bitter finish. Mouthfeel is excellent, smooth and creamy. Finally a Guinness that I really like!

Dublin brewed version from Safeway. Head light brown and persistant. Body of beer almost black. Roast and chocolate and licorice aroma, oily mouthfeel, roasty, smoky, bitter finish. Yum.

Pitch black colour with a nice brown head. Aroma of coffee and roasted malt. Nice bitter flavour with good coffee tastes. Fully bittered aftertaste-very good to try! Overall, a nice example of a foreign stout and I’m very grateful to try this beer. Many thanks to Tim for picking this up down in the caribbean! I sampled this 330 mL bottle on 15-May-2004 at the May RB Party in Toronto, Onatrio.

Sampled at the White Horse in London, England. Dark Brown. Slightly astringent, burnt grain, molasses, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar and prunes in the nose. Traditional dry stout characteristics throughout, just much bigger with notes of raisins, alcohol, chocolate, cocoa and prunes. Full bodied. Wow, Guinness can make a good beer. What a surprise.

Like Guinness on steroids - all souped up and ready to please. and please she does - there is extra roastiness and warmth and the body has the mouthfeel that most people are afraid that regular Guinness has - nice and chewy. Features the standard stout characteristics but then I thought perhaps some licorice too. Also makes you stand up and take notice with some bitterness as it goes. Nice.
