3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cant believe I’ve not rated this one yet. This one is imported from Ireland and is a month past its "best by" date. Bottle pours a dark brown with a full and dense light tan head. Light roasted aroma with tootsie roll and milk chocolate. More bitter roasted flavor but with plenty of sweet cola and chocolate again. Slight metallic trailer at the very end and some residual smokey bitter. Hides the 7.5% pretty well.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
(Bottle from DuffMan. Thx Tony!)

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Black beer with a brown head. Richy, bitter malt smell. Chocolatey malt taste up front but there’s a dash of tangy, fruity hop in there to balance it a touch and some dark chocolate which comes through slowly just when I thought the flavour had petered out. Rich, tasty stout.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Stunned it’s not rated, it’s often the only decent beer in a local shop. Nose is dark chocolate, toast, roast malt, light smoke. Taste is slightly sour, ash, chocolate, hint of blackcurrant and licorice, caramel, hint of yoghurt, prunes. Mouthfeel is oily.
It’s one of the few drinkable beers from St James’ Gate these days.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Top 10 for my favorite stouts. I love the bite that comes with it and the taste of barley. More complex than normal Guinness. I finally found it locally.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
33cl bottle at the Gentse Kano en Kajak Organisatie in Ghent (7 IV 2016). First things first. I was handed an overdue bottle, almost two years after the expiration date. I always let my beers mature past the best-before date, yet I expect a fresh beer bottle when buying one. One can imagine that this appreciation thus is rather different, opposed to a normal foreign extra stout. Let’s have a go. This classic extra stout has a very smarmy, oily character. This Irish version from St. James’s Gate pours a thick greasy liquid, really sticking to the glass, pitchblack and with a firm brown, cassonade collar on top. Good looking for sure. The scents are infiltrated with strong smoked ham notes, full of smoky malts. The taste has lots of coffee, bitters, some caramellish and dark sugar features. Very oily, medium to strong bodied. A great malts sensation, with lots of roast, from a bitterish almost imperial stout brew. This is a perfect strong black beer!
