COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Foreign Extra Stout is a beer like no other. The most full-flavoured of all. Singular and striking. Uniquely satisfying. Brewed with extra hops and roasted barley for a natural bite. Bitter and sweet. Refreshingly crisp. Always rewarding. Pure beauty. Pure GUINNESS.

Editor’s Note: This is the standard FES. Sometimes it is imported from Ireland but more often it is brewed locally. This version is most common in the Caribbean and Africa. All versions from those places, save for Jamaica, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana should be rated here.

330ml bottle, purchased in Dublin, brewed in St James Gate. Pours thick coffee black with a big frothy tan head, excellent lacing. Sweet roast malt on the nose, along with some grain and notes of plum. More roast malt in the flavour, some oats, with a mild twist of hop bitterness. Quite thick and slick in the mouth. More carbonation than the draught, but still quite soft. Not overly complex but very enjoyable.

If you ever thought Guinness would be nicer if it were concentrated down, this is the drink for you. Spicy, nutty and absolutely delicious.

Pours a dark brown with a thin foamy head. It doesn’t stay for long, and there’s little lacing on the glass. Smells of chocolate, malt and bread. Big taste of coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and licorice. A bit of bitterness. Medium mouth with some oil. Just a nice solid stout.

Au nez chocolat et café, plus complex au goût qur la guiness des pubs français. (Plus de café?!) Terreux et amertume parfaite. Sucré et alcoolisé...perfect

(Bottle from DuffMan. Thx Tony!)

Black beer with a brown head. Richy, bitter malt smell. Chocolatey malt taste up front but there’s a dash of tangy, fruity hop in there to balance it a touch and some dark chocolate which comes through slowly just when I thought the flavour had petered out. Rich, tasty stout.

Served in a snifter from a 330ml bottle. Pours almost black opaque colour with a thick dark beige head which is slowly diminishing leaving nice lacing in the glass. Aroma is roasted malts, smoke, dark chocolate and molasses. Taste is ash, dark chocolate, molasses, smoked prunes, slightly sour finish. Oliy texture with soft carbonation. Extremely nice stout!

Taste: rich toasted malt, slight fruit and spiced licorice notes with gentle hop in background. Dry toasted aroma. Black and opaque, with a dark creamy head.

Bottle. Stunned it’s not rated, it’s often the only decent beer in a local shop. Nose is dark chocolate, toast, roast malt, light smoke. Taste is slightly sour, ash, chocolate, hint of blackcurrant and licorice, caramel, hint of yoghurt, prunes. Mouthfeel is oily. It’s one of the few drinkable beers from St James’ Gate these days.

Bottle - dark and dense with large frothy tan head. Only faint aroma - good mouthfeel, thick and silky, full of flavour with good bitter finish.
