If you were in a pub sometime between 1821 and 1970, chances are this is the Guinness you would have been drinking. Originally brewed as the XX version of our Porter, itís hoppy, roasty, and crisp, with a bittersweet finish.

Lacks the character of draught. Pours jet black with tan Co2 head that doesnít hold up for long.Aroma of smokey dark malt and burnt woods. Medium bodied. More watery than its draught counterpart. Carbonation is stingy. Taste has chestnut, burnt cedar, marmite , espresso and faint cocoa into its finish which is nowhere near as smooth as nitro. I guess Iíve been spoiled by draught, but I really donít care for this bottle.

Dik donker bier met minimale blonde kraag. Heerlijk voor in een pub en goed getapt maar veel minder lekker uit fles of blik.

My Bottom Line:
Roasty edges become mild acidity and fruitiness in this anemic Dry Stout.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the brown-edged black.
-Leafy hop bitterness can be found if you wait for it.
-This is a great example of what nitrogen can do to a beer. Drink this non nitrogenated Guinness and then try the tap version on nitro. Same base beer, except the conditioning. This one lacks character at best. Yet carbonate it with a generous helping of nitrogen and it becomes a more-than-passable whipped cream version of a Dry Stout.
-Drinkability remains high because of the dryness.

Bottle, as Extra Stout (in Ireland).

Industrial beer, no information about the malts, hops or drinktemperature on the labels. A black beer with light brown head, smell is roasty, light bread, flat carbonation, light bitter, light body, oily, (I have 0.33l bottle with batch L1304F11000 and best-before 01.17)

Drank as Guinness Extra Stout. Aroma: Dark chocolate, roasted malt, pumpernickel, light hoppy spiciness and metalic notes. Appearance: Not very dense head, quite high, quite durable, body is black. Taste: Watery, mineral, some pumpernickel notes, chocolate, caramel. Palate: Body is medium-low, finish is semi-sweet, carbonation is medium.

Bottle: Ruby-black with a big, frothy tan head. Scent is mild chocolate....grain malt. Taste is light chocolate roast. Mild, light....but malty. Solid.....good stuff.
