If you were in a pub sometime between 1821 and 1970, chances are this is the Guinness you would have been drinking. Originally brewed as the XX version of our Porter, it’s hoppy, roasty, and crisp, with a bittersweet finish.

Dark pour, slight red hue, 2 fingers of tan meringue. Nose is dark roasted barley. Bittersweet. Middle is light espresso and hint molasses, followed by charred grain. Finish is bittersweet malted barley with a light hop bitterness. Light on it’s feet and full of flavor.

33cl bottle courtesy of binnys who decided to put all their special 12 pks or whatever in the mix 6. Aroma is a touch raisiny, pretty straight forward guinness, obviously missing the nitro pour that the original one has. I guess i like the nitro better, easier to slug.

Robe brune, belle mousse crémeuse. Nez assez élégant, note légèrement torréfiée sur un fond houblonné et fruité. Bouche à l’attaque fraîche, digeste, fine bulle élégante et finale houblonnée. Un stout tout en élégance.

Why are there so many bastardizations of this beer? This one tastes a little fishy.

Bottle given as a gift. Pours almost black with a light tan colour head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and caramel. Light sweetness and medium bitterness. Quite light bodied and thin textured for a stout. Finish has a roasted bitterness.

11.2 oz bottle from the Brewers Project variety pack. Aroma is bready, chocolatey, roasty. Pours black with brown highlights and a medium beige head that lasts and laces. Taste is lightly sweet, roasty, minerally, grainy, finishes very dry; definitely a UK beer. Thin and a little watery. Not bad. It’s been awhile since I had either an Extra Stout or a Foreign Extra Stout, and I always used to be a big fan of both those beers. This beer is good, but it doesn’t seem as good as my memories of those beers. Could be a change in taste, maybe.

Black with a great beige foamy head. Aroma of roast and chocolate. Dry and flat with a bittersweet finish and average carbonation, not too bad if you don’t have anything else to drink.

Can from my local office. It pours jet black with a thick, foamy tan head. The nose is earthy, rich roast, salted liquorice, charred wood, umami, tangy soy sauce character and cocoa. The taste is bitter, charred wood, rich roast malt, burnt toast, umami, liquorice, saltiness, cracked peppercorn, coffee grounds and cocoa with dry, toasty finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. This tastes actually pretty decent and is well-rounded. Reckon it would work nicely with some seafood I dare say.
