Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Transfer from BA review on 2-6-14- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours a very hazy orange-amber color with a huge thick head of a slightly orange tinted color. The head has a fantastic level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a yeasty and bready smells with the yeast bringing along aromas of spice of coriander and clove. Some fruit aromas of orange, raisin, plum, and pear are there as well producing a somewhat triple/quad like aroma. A grassy smell and a bit of alcohol booze are in the aroma as well mixing with a slight grainy smell to round out the aroma profile. Taste – The taste begins with a sweet bready taste made of some honey and caramel flavors mixed with a rather big bready taste. Other sweet flavors of a fruit nature are present right from the start with flavors of peach, apricot, raisin, and plum all there. While the caramel flavors fade as the taste advances, the flavor actually grows sweeter in nature as more fruit flavors and honey come to the tongue. While the sweetness increases, some yeasty flavors come to the tongue, bringing with them some banana and spice of coriander and a hint of clove. A light amount of a grassy flavor as well as a moderately boozy taste come to the tongue at the end of the taste, leaving a nice warming, sweet, but quite enjoyable flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The thicker body is great for the malty backbone of the beer as well as for accentuating the boozy and grassy flavors, all while the moderate carbonation is good for the sweet fruit tastes as well as for making the beer quite a bit more easy drinking. Overall the feel is rather nice. Overall – A rather tasty Belgian Quad/ Strong ale. Big sweet flavors with a decent booze and still quite drinkable and very enjoyable. Very nice.

Kuohuva hiilihapokas suutuntuma. Lievä alkoholin polte kurkussa. Hyvää, mutta. Tai no, ei muttia. Hyvää, ellei jopa erinomaista.
