Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

2015 BJCP Category: 26D Belgian Dark Strong Ale

AROMA: Strong caramel/butterscotch/treacle aroma. Rich maltiness and dark/dried fruit. Some alcohol presence. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Dark rusty copper/burnt umber/light brown. Extremely hazy but bubbles visible at edge. Large, tan, frothy head. Fantastic lacing and retention. 3/3

FLAVOR: Confectionery sweetness first and foremost. Rich, bready malt presence. Some peppery sensation on the finish. Some dark/dried fruit. Very tasty, but not quite as complex as superior examples of the style. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Full-bodied all the way. Creamy texture and smooth going down. Alcohol is prominent, but not abrasive. Finishes quite clean. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Much sweeter than most Belgian quads. Instead of fruit, itís confectionery notes. Very drinkable for such a huge brew. Not mind-blowing, but definitely impressive and memorable. 8/10

TOTAL SCORE: 42/50

Rating #2100. A slightly memorable one for this, didnít even know Gulden Draak had added a quad to their lineup but whats the hail does I knew. The head has a slight peach tinge to it but is not very solid and disappears in medium time; okay orange-ish body, aroma of shoe leather and candy like a Belgian with way too much alcohol shoved up into the nose. Flavour is a nice hay and cotton candy mix, but itís all sweet and cloying-like as the alcohol overpowers all of this. Just sugary all around. A beer of my youth makes a comeback and itís harsher than expected, I like refinement a lot more these days and itís missing here.

Draught at Delirium. RIch toffee character with pleasant dried fruit notes, cake, raisin, dry finsh with only light boozy notes. Solid brew as expected, on par with the original version.

330 ml stubby bottle with ABV listed as 10.7%. Surprised that I havenít yet rated this outstanding beer which I have had at least once before. Pours with a cloudy copper colored body that is covered by a large, off-white, somewhat bubbly head. Good looking but the appearance is certainly not the strong point of this stellar ale. The aroma and flavor are nuanced, moderately strong and highly complex. They are just short of magical: not without some magic, I suppose, but not above nit picking. Actually, I have no criticisms of the aroma, but others may find the strong dark fruits notes, including dried plums, to be too prominent. The flavor is rather sweet: worked for me but may seem a little too high for some. Feel: medium+ body with soft, medium-high carbonation. Overall: Superb!
