Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Lichtbruin bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is zoet en krachtig, caramel, licht fruitig, sinaasappel. Geslaagd bier wat mij betreft, smaak blijft gemiddeld lang hangen.

Nice Brown head, cloudy dark amber color. Simple palette, strong, sweet malty taste. This is a nice beer but a little to sweet for me, just like the regular gulden draak.

Cerveza con buena apariencia espuma muy densa, sabor muy intenso en boca alta graduación alcohólica pero muy bien integrada, más fuerte aun que la gulden draak original, una cuádruple muy recomendable

Beautiful red brown colour. Transparent beer with a nice big foamy head. Smell is cherries and honey, toffee apples and a light touch of leather. Very subtle chocolate with dark fruits and slightly alcoholic. Maybe some caramel and cinnamon. Taste starts of overly sweet but falls back and develops into an alcoholic sourness. The caramel dominates, carrying loads of fruit. Almost like jam, but with alcoholic tones. This is more like port than beer! Quite delicious, as long as you don’t expect to drink it like beer. Don’t put it in the fridge!

330mL bottle from Beer Cartel BB 08/05/2016 Gotta love the stubbie Belgian bottles - good things always come out them! Rather attractive looking beer - hazy orange body with big, dense mousse lingering leaving clumpy lace in its wake. Big, potent aroma; pale caramel, biscuit, ripe pear & peach esters, vanilla, white pepper, clove & nutmeg phenolic spice, touch of floral hop character. Serious weight to the palate, lingers looooong without being cloying, creamy carbonation, starts syrup-like then drawn out by warming, soothing booze. Lots of lovely caramel & toasty, almost waffle-like, sweet maltiness on the body. Ripe apricots, peach, pear, with an array of sweet woody spice notes toward a moderately bitter finish. Proper winter warmer (he says; drinking this in the middle of summer). Was actually expecting a dark beer, but this was certainly adequate!

Review number 400. 330ml bottle, poured into La Chouffe tulip. A: Bronze, clear, one and a half finger head, good retention with lots of lacing clinging to the side of the glass. S: Fruity, boozy esters, some cherry. T: Hits you with the trademark Van Steenberge yeasty fruity sweetness, followed up with a hard hitting boozy kick, strong notes of brandy. M: Minimal carbonation, heavy chewy texture, the booze made it burn. O: Basically this was brandy thinned out with water, a really heavy sipping beer, the booze took away attention from anything else, slightly disappointing offering from one of my favorite breweries, I hope age can mellow this beer.

UPDATED: MAR 18, 2015 Drank in bottle @home. Great beer, complex at the nose, hints of caramel, beautiful for the palate. Although very alcoholic, its strong character hide the alcohol, that doesn?t spoil its great taste. Perfect quadrupel.
