COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Honing rook fruitig achtig aroma. Bitterzoet fruitig in de mond, zoetige nasmaak in de afdronk, doet crème achtig aan. Mooi gevarieerd palet aan smaken.

0.33 bottle. Hazy, light brown color and a small cream-colored head of great retention. Aroma full of malts, honey, fruits, alcohol, and sugar. Sweet taste, a lot of malts, some candized sugar, and a touch of molasses. Medium to full body, creamy texture, and soft carbonation. Finish is a tad sourer than the rest with more fruity flavors and candy sugar though it isn’t as amazing as in most quads. Overall the brew is great although it would be hard to mess up a quadrupel; it doesn’t stand out, just utilizes the quadrupel’s features well.

330ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber with some visible sediment, and a light tan head. Candied fruits, bread crust, alcohol and fig on the nose. Taste wise, concorde grape, medium metallic notes, more candied fruit, alcohol, light treacle, and butter tart filling like notes up front that lead into sweet raisiny notes and light bitterness in a sweet fruitcake finish. I enjoy it, but I also wonder, has anyone made a "Pecan Pie" or "Butter Tart" beer?

A decadent beer wih malt for days, plus a hint of hops for balance. Loads of burnt sugar, candi sugar, toffee, creme brulee, aged rum. I don’t get much dark fruit flavors that I expect in most quads. I do get some wine character - white wine, I think, which lightens the palate a bit. Very smooth for the ABV. Could use a little more carbonation. Overall an outstanding beer.

Bottle - 330ml. Beautiful hazy golden body with an average, lasting, off-white foamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with honeyish, orange, and herbal hints. Its well balanced malty/hoppy taste carries fruity, candy sugar, and citrusy notes. Ends with a long, warming, robust bittersweet finish. Enjoyable.

Luxurious take on the old Gulden Draak since 2011, with the ’9000’ as a reference to Ghent, which has this number as its postal code. Thick yellowish beige, creamy head, misty copper robe. Strong aroma of walnuts, caramel, cognac, vanilla, almond, honey, black pepper, whisky; sweet taste, candi syrup and candied fruits, liqueurish, honeyish malts, caramelly, quite complex finish with brandy-like, warming alcohol and pleasant herbal hops. Before Van Steenberge started making this kind of luxury beers (relatively recently) I found the regular Gulden Draak their best brew, but it is clearly surpassed by its own offspring now. Delightful, if this is the path this brewery intends to follow, I am curious for what the future will bring. Certainly a beer with a high ageing potential too.
