Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

750ml bottle - My nephew was kind enough to bring this with him to our Thanksgiving gathering. Really tasty, and although I was expecting a huge sugar-bomb it wound up being really nice for the style and not overly sweet at all. Light notes of vanilla-like whiskey, toffee, and dried golden raisins. Flavor perfectly hides any semblance of alcohol and what’s left is apricot jam, toffee, and dates. Supple texture w/o being syrupy or overly sticky. Finishes in a fantastic way. You really would have a hard time finding anything to complain about with this one.

Light amber colour, white head. Blend aroma and taste, sweet malty tones like caramel and honey and a strong alcoholic warmth. Lingering sweet alcoholic aftertaste. Medium carbonation, big body, oily mouthfeel.

Bottle at De Kelk, Brugge, 17/10/14. Clear amber with a decent beige covering. Nose is light spice, rich malt, toffee, touch of booze, nutty twang. Taste comprises mellow dark fruit vibes, toffee, toasted brown sugars, raisens, dates, fruit cake. Full bodied, fine carbonation, sweet licks in the close tempered with some bitterness that keeps this drinkable allied to some woody tunes and warming alcohol. Solid quad, doesn’t get too sweet or cloying.

Bottle. Dark orange with lasting foam head. Strong yeast aroma, soft French cheeses, canned peas, boozy hint. Interesting taste: not as sour as it first appears, mellow, yeasty, creamy development. Belgian (sour) mayonnaise, cabbage, hint of cheese (belegen Gouda) in aftertaste.

330ml bottle served in a Leffe chalice. A: Pours a deep orange golden to amber clear color. A huge yellow head is formed. Medium retention and few lacings left. Too clear to a quad S: Very sweet in the nose. Caramel, caramel malts, yeasts, dark fruits. The mix of all gives a strong bubblegum smell T: Sweet upfront. Caramel, caramel malts. Brown sugar. Belgian yeasts, dark dry fruits. Again, bubbledgum. Mild hops in the end M: Heavy molasses body. Medium carbonation. Sweet upfront, mild bitter aftertaste O: Good beer. I’m not very impressed.
