Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Bottle. Golden amber, beery colour. Spicy belgian yeastyness, some alc, pale malts... some citrus coriander. Full bodied. Some sweetness, icky caramel. Feels a bit too boozy icky right now. Quality of the stuff is still top-notch, doesn’t just fit me now.

Best before: 2015, but... gushing! Heavy gushing. Strange. Very bubbly head, high carbonation, amber color. Belgian notes in taste, some wine ones too. Pleasant warming alcohol note. Yeasty aroma.

Achei a Gulden Draak 9000 muito fraca de aromas. O forte cheiro do álcool também não me agradou. Está devendo também em sabor perante as outras quadrupel.

On the fence on this one. Just not seeing it as a quad. As a tripel, superb. But as a quad? No. Pours light copper in color. Not picking up any dark fruit notes as to be expected. Great beer; not a great quad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle From Marlou. Warm brown color, big head. Brighter than the original, not cloudy at all, with aromas of malt, caramel, plums and spices, not very intense. At the beginning alcohol gets wrapped up real good by the sweet malts, caramel falvors, with cloves and plums. Creates a warm feeling in the stomach, but the sweet finish of this beer gets too alcoholic. It is in fact not more complex than the original "Gulden Draak", but only sweeter with alcohol being too present - all in all this beer misses balance, tries to imitate the original without new ideas. The overall taste doesn’t stay long on the tongue, but the lower carbonation creates a medium body.

The normal Gulden Draak is great, but the 9000 is nasty. Artificial, soapy and alcoholic. A disgrace.

Bottle. Hazy orange/gold pour. Large grain notes on the nose. Taste has hints of citrus and spice. Thin flavor and mouth feel. Very drinkable.
