Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Pours a strange red copper colour. Aroma is caramelised plums and a slight tart smell. Sweet flavour if not a little light on the mouthfeel ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle, 10.5%. Vinous aroma, some earth, very caramelly and very peppery. Almost clear ruby/amber colour. Small white head. The flavour is quite sweet and caramelly, and quite peppery. Tastes oxidised, but not too much, and it balances off the beer well enough. Quite booze, but has a warming quality to it.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy amber with airy light beige head. Clear, spicy aroma with notes of malt and caramel. Sweet flavour of caramel malt with spicy notes and warming alcohol presence. Fruity and caramellish aftertaste with a distinct boozy note. I really like the beer style but this Quadrupel seems to be a trifle too powerful for me.

Although the pale colour and quadruple classification through me off for a while, this is very similar to the Gulden Draak I know and love. I first tried this beer in its home city of Ghent, Belgium this past June. The nose has a beautiful fruity and slightly floral aroma with tons of malts notes as well. Sweet and dessert like richness with notes of apricot, white grapes, citrus fruits and pears. The finish is heavy and rather bitter with the same wine yeast flavour as the original. Overall one hell of a brew.

Sampled at the fat dragon beer dinner. Clear brown pour. Big malty sweet Goodness. Slightly boozy, but not hot. Smells hotter than it tastes. Malty Belgian Candi sugar pervades. Sweeter than the original. Great sweet dessert beer.

Tapped at Hostinec Richtar Jakub in Bratislava/Slovakia. A phenomenal Belgian strong ale or barley wine if you prefer. Delicious in aroma, taste and overall experience. A great Belgian beer!

Bottle. Pours Amber Orange with a thin White head. Lots of flavour to this one. Candied berries, plums, prunes. Rampant alcohol. Some spicy yeast character and a fair hit of sugary candy sweetness. Pretty nice but not as good as its little brother.
