Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

January 25, 2014 - bottle shared by Jake. Orangish brown pour with some head. Aroma had a lot of grain with some sweetness and fruit. Taste was consistent with aroma, but a tad thin and quite a bit of heat in finish.

Gulden Draak 9000 has a medium, off-white, quasi-fizzy head, a hazy, caramel appearance, which becomes rather milky, once the caked bottom contents are swished and poured in, and a heavy sheen of foam left behind on the goblet. Aroma is of rich, sweet, bready, dense, husky, grain, and the flavor is of all that, with prunes, dates, sugar, vegetable matter, and wet grain husk. Mouthfeel is medium and prickly, and Gulden Draak 9000 finishes semi-dry, rich, a bit cloying, fruity, and complex. A sipper, not a gulper! RJT

UPDATED: APR 19, 2014 33cl in a Trappist glass. Pours a light orangey colour with little head. Somewhat disappointing as I was expecting an ABT style Quad rather than a La Trappe style. Very much similar to the La Trappe Quadrupel and offers little over that. I will stick to the standard Gulden Draak and La Trappe Quadrupel.

0,33l fles, donker amberkleurig bier mistig met een flinke crème schuimkraag. Geur is caramel, met mout en gist, smaak is vol zoet een overdaad aan alcoholwarmte. Aardig bier, mist wat complexiteit.

I’m a big fan of Belgian beers in general, especially the Triple and Quadruple styles, so Gulden Draak 9000 is right up my alley. It pours a lovely coppery amber with just a slight haze and virtually no head. There is a little bit of web-like lacing left in the glass as you drink it. The aroma combines the usual Belgian fruit, spice, and sweetness with a hint of alcohol. The flavor matches up with the aroma. It’s sweet without being overly sugary. It’s spicy to the "just right" level. It’s fruity without tasting like a fruit beer. In short, it’s everything I look for in the Quad style, and nothing I dislike. Hops bitterness is minimal in this one. Even at 10% ABV, the warming note of the alcohol is not intense or uncomfortable. The finish is fruity and sweet, and very pleasant overall.

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2014 Wonderful to the eyes and also very good. Belgian yeast, malt and a lot of caramel. Some vinous aroma. Very good quadruple.

Bottle 0,33L. Hazy orange colour with small, creamy, light brown head. Aroma of rum punch, all kind of dark fruits, roasted malts, toffee and some yeasts. Taste starts light sweet, with crispy mouthfeel, coloured with dry fruits and ends heavy bitter with long lasting aftertaste. Full body, oily texture, lively carbonation. Reminds me of barely wine beers...

Drank at home while watching ’Hustle’ 15-1-2014. Okay beer. Carbonation is very present in the taste, just like the alcohol. Taste is not very rich. A bit sour aftertaste. Mediocre beer.

Pours an orange with white head. Aroma of sugared berries. This beer is so sweet it puts wooly socks on my teeth. Taste is sweet caramel, more berries, biscuits, bread. So bubbly feels like champagne. A little is great, but too much and I think my blood sugar levels will be blasting through the roof.

330 ml bottle. Pours a clear orangeish gold with a resilient white head. Aroma is caramel, brown sugar, roasted cereals. Flavor is orchard fruit, boatloads of sugar, vanilla cake, mint and bubble gum. Finish is boozey, sugar, and these violet soap-flavored bubble gums from way back in the days. Lingering green apple flavor. Medium to full body, soft mouthfeel, weak to average carbonation. Sugarbomb - got my glycemic index WAYYYYYY up.
