Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Ambrée trouble, effervescence moyenne-forte à bulles fines, col beige moyen. Malts caramel doux, légèrement vineuse, petite amertume, un rien métallique, agréablement fruitée en filigranes, l’ABV ne se fait pas vraiment sentir.

Bottle from Y Delyn Wine Bar, Mold. Pours a hazy deep amber with a long lasting frothy two finger head. Aromas of raisin, sugar and bread. Taste of brown sugar, caramel and malt with a strong alcohol back and slight bitterness. Well carbonated and goes down well. Nice stuff.

Lively carbonation, with light white head, colour is light brown. Aroma is spices, candy sugar and bread. Taste was a bit off putting at first. But as the glass sat for a bit the flavour opened up, I get butterscotch, bread, a hint of brown sugar and a slight bitter aftertaste. Pretty much zero heat but its a touch oxidized but I think this bottle is pretty old. Not like the quads I have sampled but a tasty brew nontheless.

Helderen koperen kleur met een aardige creme kraag. Ruikt caramel, honing, vanille. Smaakt wat zwaar, caramel, hop en alcohol.

Clear dark copper (awfully lighter hued for a quad, but whatevs) with a large foamy light-beige head. Nose is raisiny with a bit of dark earthy sweetness. Flavor is a little musty yet dark an complex with candi sugar and deep earthy Belgian toffee with a little date and raisin background, and a wee bit of earthy caramel. Well made.

On tap; poured a orange amber color with an off white head. Aroma fruit, sweet punch, apples and alcohol. A lot of fruity esters, apples and alcohol; a unibroue type style. Fairly good.

11/30/2013. From a 750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Pours deep amber with a white head. Sweet malty aromas with caramel and light fruit. Medium to high carbonation. Buttery mouth feel with caramel and boozy flavors. Very nice sipping beer.

330 ml boottle. Deep golden and crystal clear. Medium-sized fine white head that clings to the glass. Mellow aroma with notes of noble hops and marzipan. Smooth malty flavours. Belgian yeast flavours, but well hidden. Lots of marzipan flavours. Rich and sweet without cloying. A little too alcoholic perhaps, but otherwise very nice.

Pours nice deep red/orange color into a Trappist glass with persistent one finger head. Strong rum & raisins aroma with some toasted malt. Taste is rum & raisins, brandy, burnt caramel and some hop bitterness at the end cutting through all the sweetness. Think this sits more in the BSA category rather than quad. Like a lot of other reviewers have said, not the most complex quad/ dark BSA but I think it's still a very enjoyable sipper nonetheless. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours cloudy amber with white head. Nose is spice, caramel/toast, prune. Flavour is same, fairly sweet, soft alcohol notes on the finish. Probably the least complex abt I’ve had yet--hence the short review--but still good.
