Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

I truly thought that Gulden Draak could not be improved upon. I was wrong! This stuff is the hammer of the gods! Aroma - smells of strong, dense fruits with a bit of an alcohol smell. Appearance - beautiful pour with a thin head and dark body. Taste - complex and thoroughly tasteful. Lots of up front fruitiness with a little bit of burn, but everything is tied together nicely.

330ml bottle. Dark amber color. Medium size, thick white head, stays. Yeast, malts, grainy, alcohol and sweet notes in aroma. Alcohol, sweet, malty taste. Strong alcohol in taste disturbs.

Small bottle. Hazy orange body, steady head. Aroma is a mix of brandy, dried fruit and estery yeast. Taste has caramel, hints of brandy and yeast. Kind of doppelbocky - like a stronger version of Paulaner Salvator with Belgian yeast. Not quite as well balanced. Alcohol is well hidden though. Good but not impressing.

Ein ganz schöner Bomber, aber dabei dennoch fein, wenn auch sehr voluminös. Angenehm im Karamell mit Nüssen, dabei noch leicht gerstig. Guter Brummer.

Bottle 33 cl from Amstein - St Légier (CH). Russet amber with beige foam, thick and creamy, forming laces. Malted fruity aromas, alcoholic, toffy-stewed fruits, notes of Triple Sec. The mouth is crackling, very sweet, very malted, liquorish, round with caramel, candied fruity notes and acidulity. It spreads in the softness, warm and digestive, balanced of hop-almond.

BB 03.09.2015, 0.33L bottle from Van Steenberge Sampler Pack. Pours clear amber with big white head. The head stays for a long time, it never disappears. Aroma: fresh fruits, sweet apples, raisins, hints of sourness and phenols. Taste: very sweet, some apples, very strong alcohol. Finish has some bitter kick. Lively carbonation. Overall: the appearance isn’t maybe typical for quadruple, but I think it looks delicious, the aroma is also rather nice, but the taste isn’t great; the alcohol is really distracting. It’s not a bad beer, but nothing exciting neither.

Botltle, 33cl. Pours a surprisingly clear golden/honey colour with a modest head. Aroma is faint, pretty disappointing. Taste is magnificent considering how faint the aroma is. Very robust and earthy, with a strong alcohol finish well balanced by the beer’s richness. Excellent, strong beer to warm your winters.

Clear dark golden with thick island-like white head. What a lovely appearance. Aroma is hard to smell through the dense head. Aroma is sweet caramel, sweet red fruit, Belgian spice and some mild alcohol. Round mouth feel with creamy carbonation. Aftertaste is sweet red fruit, caramel, floral hops and alcoholic rum. Lingering alcoholic rum. Overall: A excellent beer! Maybe a little to alcoholic.

Ambrée trouble, effervescence moyenne-forte à bulles fines, col beige moyen. Malts caramel doux, légèrement vineuse, petite amertume, un rien métallique, agréablement fruitée en filigranes, l’ABV ne se fait pas vraiment sentir.
