Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

750ml bottle, thanks to Anthony D. Shared with friends. Tasted immediately after trying a 750ml of the standard Gulden Draak. Mostly hazy amber orange color. Thin white head. Ropes and dots of lace. Bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Kind of sticky. Prettybig sweet taste, alcohol seems more noticeable than in regular draak, and this seems more sweet. Caramel malt, light spice, some spicy earthy hop. Moderate hop bitterness may be more than typical for a "quad". Like standard Gulden Draak, though, this hides the alcohol impressively well.

Encore plus foncée que sa petite sœur, riches odeur et saveur d'alcool, de caramel. Bel équilibre et puissance en bouche. Intéressante mais moins bonne que la Gulden Draak classique selon moi.

33cl bottle to Chimay trappist glass, this beer pours a transparent dark amber with a chunky off white head. Aroma consists of banana, bread, alcohol, butterscotch, caramel and butter. Taste somewhat mirrors the aroma...sickly sweet but has the hop bitterness to even it out. Lots of ripe fruit and medicinal notes. Palate/mouthfeel is slick and oily, co2 high, flavours kind of awkward in the mouth but the alcohol is integrated quite well. Overall....this is just OK....the original is better.

Golden orange with small white head. Aroma caramel, lightly fruity. Medium full body, a little alcohol but pretty well hidden. Flavor is sweet, caramel, toffee, yeast. I found it surprisingly drinkable, but not all that complex.

Pours out of the bottle in a deep dark brown colour with steady head and smooth body. Aroma of Belgian yeast and raisins. Taste of rum raisins, Belgian yeast, nuts, malt and almonds. Very nice and tasty beer - I enjoyed it a lot.

Nice amber color. Soapy head. Tastes like sweet caramel with hints of toffee and much alcohol. Uneven balanced to my taste. No real complexity. Sweetness and alcohol make it a burden to drink.

Amber, huge white head. Caramel, alcoholic, slightly herbal, spicy. Some alcohol in the taste, heavy body, sweet finish. Nice beer, balanced, complex.

Rose, sweet alcohol aroma. Bitter taste but finishes sweet with caramel. Light in the mouth - ultimately easier to drink than standard Draak despite the higher ABV.

I know I’m supposed to love this, but it is so strong that I have a hard time finding the nuanced flavors. Color is nice dark brown, no aroma, and strong caramel flavor. I won’t be able to drive home.

FROM NOTES: July 29, ’12 Enjoyed this beer at Monarch Beverage, poured into a tasting glass. A: Earthy yeasts, malty, and some fruity flavors. A: Copper, orange in color. Very small head, not much lacing. T: Notes of cherry and oak, good malty flavor, with a little bit of spice like coriander. P: Malts were nice, good warming from the alcohol. O: Enjoyable beer and at 10.7% it’s a sniper.
