Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

A tough one, IMO not the best around, thought it was a bit difficult to drink without anything to eat along with this beer, because of it’s strong alcohol taste, but at least it is remarkable in it’s own way. Positively surprised overall. APPROVED BY TAVERNY’S BLACK METAL CREW !

UPDATED: APR 21, 2016 Again the rating here surprises me. This is the third bottle of a 6pk sampler I’ve tried...I think I drank them backwards at least according to ratings here, I did. This one is just a bit too complex for me...it doesn’t come together well for my palate...seems the flavors are fighting. I can drink it and it is definitely proving it’s double digit ABV...it might now curious to see how the next 3 measure up.

0,33l bottle. Cloudy golden/orange colour with shrinking off-white head. Aroma: Banana and caramel but very intensive. Taste: Complex! Sweet start, dessert like and fruity. Good sweet wine taste too. The bitter taste is waiting for 10 seconds to come. Than it has a bitter and warming motuhfeel. Very interesting and serious one. Full bodied with medium/soft carbonation. Long bitter/sweet finish. A very good beer, pleasure to drink.

Bottle. Pours amber orange with a frothy off-white head that left good lacing. Aroma of yeast, dried fruit, raisins and caramel. Flavor was sweet with caramel, toffee, yeast, sweet malts, raisins and candi sugar.

2015 BJCP Category: 26D Belgian Dark Strong Ale

AROMA: Strong caramel/butterscotch/treacle aroma. Rich maltiness and dark/dried fruit. Some alcohol presence. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Dark rusty copper/burnt umber/light brown. Extremely hazy but bubbles visible at edge. Large, tan, frothy head. Fantastic lacing and retention. 3/3

FLAVOR: Confectionery sweetness first and foremost. Rich, bready malt presence. Some peppery sensation on the finish. Some dark/dried fruit. Very tasty, but not quite as complex as superior examples of the style. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Full-bodied all the way. Creamy texture and smooth going down. Alcohol is prominent, but not abrasive. Finishes quite clean. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Much sweeter than most Belgian quads. Instead of fruit, it’s confectionery notes. Very drinkable for such a huge brew. Not mind-blowing, but definitely impressive and memorable. 8/10
