Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Luxurious take on the old Gulden Draak since 2011, with the ’9000’ as a reference to Ghent, which has this number as its postal code. Thick yellowish beige, creamy head, misty copper robe. Strong aroma of walnuts, caramel, cognac, vanilla, almond, honey, black pepper, whisky; sweet taste, candi syrup and candied fruits, liqueurish, honeyish malts, caramelly, quite complex finish with brandy-like, warming alcohol and pleasant herbal hops. Before Van Steenberge started making this kind of luxury beers (relatively recently) I found the regular Gulden Draak their best brew, but it is clearly surpassed by its own offspring now. Delightful, if this is the path this brewery intends to follow, I am curious for what the future will bring. Certainly a beer with a high ageing potential too.

Pours an almost clear/slightly cloudy amber/brownish colour with good head and little carbonation. Strong roasted and fruity aroma, nice balance of sweet and bitter notes. Taste is a strong roasted and dry nutty flavour, some sweet notes of fruit there, also hints of coffee and liquorish. Medium bodied, goes down smooth with some nice warmth.

330 ml bottle. Unclear medium orange copper, lasting fine firm off-white foam. Aroma is deep, sweet c-malt, riper fruits, some yeast. Taste is richer toasted c-malts, quite fruity, some yeast and mild spice. Soft carbonation, medium bodied, low hopped. ABV mostly unnoticeable, warm in the finish. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

Drinking from a 33 cl bottle. A sweet, fruity aroma. The clear orange beer has a medium white head. A sweet, alcohol taste. Nice but not special. Medium carbonated.

Tasted on 8/14/14 from a capped 330mL bottle purchased at Woodland Wine Merchant. Pours hazy burnt auburn with a very thick beige head that slowly recedes to very thick lace that sticks to the inside of the glass. The nose is full of sweet caramel and toffee with an almost vinous fruity note, reminiscent of all great quads, and a very nice doughy bread aroma, and plenty of alcoholic burn. The flavor is the same with the sweet caramel, toffee, and bread up front, moving to just a bit of caramelized bitterness and the same alcoholic vinous note from the nose. The body is very full with lively, filling, but still fairly smooth carbonation, and a long caramel and toffee finish.

Turbio espesor en la apariencia. Buena cabeza bronceada. Buen lazo también. Aroma a licor igual q las notas principales q es un licor fuerte con caramelo. Ligero amargor del volumen de lúpulos en el cuerpo que es completo y pesado. Largo y seco paladar. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dit is nu eens echt hoe een goede quadrupel hoort te zijn. Echt een topper met een lekkere volle smaak.

Draught: Nice sweet beer, however for me, it is missing the carbonation. It almost has a Nitro feel which I don't like; almost watered down. However the alcohol works, and the flavor is nice. It is better than most. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap pour in tulip glass at Sheffield’s in Chicago. Wow, this is a smooth, deceptively alcohol fueled beer. Lots of sugary sweetness throughout. Extremely easy to drink. Leans into the dark fruit without erring on the side of a Belgian sour. I’m very impressed by this quad rendition.

Bottle 33cl. Golden beer with a white head that lasts somewhat. Aroma has sweetness and malt. Taste immediately betrays it’s high alcohol percentage, but also has a very complex sweet, bitterness. Great for a cold winter night.
