Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

330mL bottle from Beer Cartel BB 08/05/2016 Gotta love the stubbie Belgian bottles - good things always come out them! Rather attractive looking beer - hazy orange body with big, dense mousse lingering leaving clumpy lace in its wake. Big, potent aroma; pale caramel, biscuit, ripe pear & peach esters, vanilla, white pepper, clove & nutmeg phenolic spice, touch of floral hop character. Serious weight to the palate, lingers looooong without being cloying, creamy carbonation, starts syrup-like then drawn out by warming, soothing booze. Lots of lovely caramel & toasty, almost waffle-like, sweet maltiness on the body. Ripe apricots, peach, pear, with an array of sweet woody spice notes toward a moderately bitter finish. Proper winter warmer (he says; drinking this in the middle of summer). Was actually expecting a dark beer, but this was certainly adequate!

Review number 400. 330ml bottle, poured into La Chouffe tulip. A: Bronze, clear, one and a half finger head, good retention with lots of lacing clinging to the side of the glass. S: Fruity, boozy esters, some cherry. T: Hits you with the trademark Van Steenberge yeasty fruity sweetness, followed up with a hard hitting boozy kick, strong notes of brandy. M: Minimal carbonation, heavy chewy texture, the booze made it burn. O: Basically this was brandy thinned out with water, a really heavy sipping beer, the booze took away attention from anything else, slightly disappointing offering from one of my favorite breweries, I hope age can mellow this beer.

UPDATED: MAR 18, 2015 Drank in bottle @home. Great beer, complex at the nose, hints of caramel, beautiful for the palate. Although very alcoholic, its strong character hide the alcohol, that doesn?t spoil its great taste. Perfect quadrupel.

Enorme complejidad con chorros de compota, caramelo y levadura belga envueltos en especias y un frescor vegetal. Poderosa en boca, cálida y dulzona, densa pero equilibrada al milímetro para que pese lo justo y pida otro trago.

Aroma has hint of caramel and leaves. Although very strong beer the alcohol is not dominant. Nice golden color, liquid is hazy, head is minimal. Medium sweetness, lightly bitter, full body, thick feel, fizzy, long finish. I liked this much better than the Gulden Draak in white bottle.

Shy aroma lacking specificity. First impression is enjoyable thanks to its creamy body. Then we are let down down by a repulsive perfume note. The finish is as refined as that potent beer i won’t mention which homeless people drink in cans.

Nice Amber color, thick off white head. Aroma malt and alcohol, look and aroma similar to boulevard 6th glass but taste is smoother and has a nice creamy quality. I don't taste as much of the dark fruits like other quads but still has a sweetness that I'm not placing. Very good. I'd rank below St. Bernardus XII and Rochefort 10, think I like 3 Philosophers better as well. But definitely a step above Sixth Glass and very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
