Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

I’m learning about the Belgian beers and this one was another delight. The palate was nice and heavy while the taste had nice rich caramel overtones The 10.5% alcohol was somewhat muted, okay maybe it tasted like a 8.5-9.0% beer. I actually like a beer that is not too hot. It was a beer I picked up understand the Belgian beers and will try it again when I have the chance.

Amber brew with nice head that does fade down to thin head fast. Smells of fruit and alcohol. Taste is alcohol, fruit, slightly sour, almost like a wine. This is the 4th brew out of a sampler 6 pack from this brewery and unfortunately this one is a let down after the others I tried. Two more to try and I hope they are better than this one.

Orange, tan pour with a struggling white head. Nose is red liquorice and yeast. Bittersweet. Middle is spritzer, cherries and medium malt body. Finish dries slightly, but still shows a fruity sweetness.

Clearish copper color with a sticky off-white head. Aroma zest and yeasty, notes of black pepper and Belgian yeast spice. Taste yeasty, sweet, phenolic, zesty on the border of spritzy, the high carbonation lightens the body and helps hide the alcohol, as well as give a dry finish. Warming sensation down the throat reminds you that it’s still a 10.5% beer. This feels more like a Triple on steroids than a true quadruple.
