Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a chalice. The appearance was a nice hazy golden brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated at a rather slow pace. The lacing was there in a nice speckled sort of semi--thick spider web fashion. The smell had a nice blend of Belgian spices to combine gently with some apples, peaches, plums and raisins. There was even a nice light caramel malt gently coming in. The taste was mainly an almost perfect blend of sweet fruits to Belgian spices just coating my taste buds very nicely. On the palate, this one sat about a medium to heavy. So, it’s more of a sipper which is good for a quad. The alcohol even seems to be somewhat tame. Overall, what a great quad more than worthy of having again.

330 ml bottle bought at Belgian Beer International in Tsuen Wan.

Looks: Cloudy hazy amber honey colour with thin traces of yeast sediments; One and half finger head and beautiful crumpety light beige foam which lasted for 3 minutes; Excellent and beautiful sticky lacing with very small and bubbly carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant rich malt, with strong plum, bubblegum, raisins, apricots, peaches, nice sugar syrup, liquor, strong Bel yeast, light lemon and very light grass.

Taste: Strong and nice sweet rich malt, with strong plum, light raisins, light apricots, warm alcohol, strong thick molasses, strong Bel yeast, lime, light bitter hops and very light grass.

Body: Full body. Slick and quite creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Dominated by rich maltyness and dark fruits - plumy and light raisins - plus light dry apricots. Bel yeast is very notable but not as domineering as St. Bernardus Abt 12. Quite simple but very solid and pleasing.

Booze and Sweetness: Neat taste of liquor with hints of brandy. Sweetness is all molasses, no cloying syrups; The 10.5% abv is manifested in warming alcohol - quite potent but comes in small waves, very comfy if you sip carefully. The knock-on is certainly not as hard-hitting as Piraat 10.5%. Very nice!

Hoppiness: Very light grassy nose. Fitting lime and very light grassy taste; Bitterness is moderate to light for an abrupt, low-fi bitter-sweet finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Rich and nice sweet boozy to mouth.

Comments: As a strong Belgian Ale, this one is right up there, but as a Quadrupels? While each of the big three (Westy 12, St. Bernardus 12, and Rochefort 10) has something distinctive to offer, this one seems to play it safe - the neat fruity and light liquor aroma, just-right plum, booze and pleasing sweetness - to give you the impression that this is a ‘go to’ Quads - very nice no doubt - but not able to go beyond as one of the best. Hey, the dust has been settled, so this one is a couple par below the top dogs, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I like this one as a go-to Quads!

750 ml bottle into chalice, bottled on 11/19/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear bright orange color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big pear, apple, plum, golden raisin, apricot, white grape, light banana, clove, pepper, candi sugar, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big pear, apple, golden raisin, plum, apricot, white grape, light banana, pepper, clove, candi sugar, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Moderate earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of pear, apple, golden raisin, plum, apricot, white grape, light banana, pepper, clove, candi sugar, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt sweetness; with a great crisp malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly slick/prickly moutfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome pale Quadrupel style. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
