Gulden Draak, lonely at the top for 25 years, now gets company
The birthday present: Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple, an enrichment of the Gulden Draak range.
An ode to the past and to the city of (9000) GHENT The Gulden Draak is named after the gilded statue on top of the belltower of Ghent. Such eminent symbol, that has been standing firm for over 6 centuries, deserves equally grand beers. The unsurpassed Gulden Draak as dark tripel of 10,5% alcohol gets, after 25 years of growing success, quite an addition, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

All features of the Gulden Draak The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.

With addition of extra malt The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.

In line with the traditions of Brewery Van Steenberge Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste.

Pours a clear reddish bronze with a foamy white head that holds well and leaves ample lacing; fruitcake dipped in port aromas; thick and rich on the tongue with a bitter oily finish with a slight alcohol burn.

11.2 oz. bottle, consumed on 7-19-15. Labeled as “Brouwerij Van Steenberge Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple Ale.” Nice, full-bottle, opaque, plastic label protects the contents from light and looks good; other Belgian breweries should adopt this practice. Pours a hazy, cloudy, surprisingly light brown (quite light in shade for the style) with a moderate to large amount of thick, cream-colored head. Good-looking beer. Scents of raisin, plum, candy sugar, and apricot. Fresh, yeasty aroma smells like freshly baked raisin bread. Pruny, plummy, caramel, toffee flavor. Apple cider with cinnamon. A touch of umami and dryness. Also a touch of booze; clearly a high-ABV beer. Medium body, surprisingly light in body for the style. Lively and frothy in the palate. Not as complex as is ideal for the style. Overall, a decent beer, but I’ve had far better in the style. I probably should have let it age a year or two; I consumed it soon after purchase.

25.9 oz super bottle into a large ommengang glass. Pours a dark bronzed orange. Wonderful head retention, huge, white, lingering lacing. Aroma of spices, pepper, clove, ginger, orange. Taste of sweet malts, sweet orange, pineapple, caramel, biscuits, tangerine flow. Dry orange peel aftertaste, sugar then spice mingle. This is a Solid quad, abv is known and welcomed since inception. Brings a warmth of beer love all over the place, nice. The bitterness at the end is a bit off putting, but only a good reason to have more.

earthy, butterscotch, jam, yeasty, rich, malty, ABV evident, light perfume and complex spicy notes. Amber colour, medium beige head, lacing. Big sweetness, noticable bite, lightly salty, big, complex and layered, ABV evident, bordering on boozy, but not crossing over Said border. Fullbodied, sticky, fizzy, long warming finish. A fine example of the style.

Hazy golden/orange, beige minimal head. Nose is sweet malts, very sweet, honey. Taste is also too sweet and malty. Not bad at all, but again, too sweet. They could have made it much better.
